Just use your td04. You're getting ahead of yourself here. Any bigger and you need supporting mods. Injectors, engine management, dohc heads or performance cams, upgraded fuel pump, wideband o2 sensor and gauge, intercooler (even with td04), exhaust, etc. Seems you have a lot of research to do on these cars. Maybe suspension mods are a better choice for added fun in handling. Cheaper and sometimes more noticeable and safer. New performance tires too and brakes can't hurt or new performance pads and new rotors. Upgrade brake lines. Lightweight wheels are a good mod. Lightened flywheel or pulleys. Lots of ideas. Just realize if its more power you want its gonna cost a lot of money. Estimate a total and multiply that by 3 and you may be in the ballpark of what you wind up spending in the end.

Agreed.

If you get the VF43 - a good turbo for spool and top end- get the Rob Tuned ECU and supporting mods.

Put the TD04 in now, presumably w/an IC and run that to see if you want "MORE".

Yes.

And for future reference the #'s after a VFxx such as VF11, VF43, etc. refer to the chronological order /age, NOT the size.

For the US STi there is the VF39, VF43 and VF48 from '04-'12 (last I read) - they are all very similar in size.

The largest turbo in the VF series is the VF22 (IIRC), which was used back in the late 90's on the WRX/STi.

get yourself a set of 97-99 dohc 2.5 heads and the intake manifold. huge improvement over the 2.2 heads with their dinky ports and valves.

Does this require any other supporting mods? or do they just slap right on like legos?

You have to drill and tap the passenger side head for coolant and oil for the turbo. Pretty easy to do before you install them.

Don't forget the oil dip stick pipe. The stock one will not bolt up the the dohc heads . Plus you don't have to tap the head for waterline for the turbo. Just hook them up with the heater core. But tap the oil return though, that's a must.
