What turbo?
For a 91 EJ22T
I have looked at a lot of replacement turbos but nothing has stood out as being the one that fits what I am looking for. Maybe the forum knows?
I am looking for in this order of importance:
1. Factory fitment
2. Best Response
3. Most torque
I'd also like to run the rob tune route if at all possible.

What turbo?
You can run pretty much anything except a twin scroll unless you change the piping. Most common seems to be the td04. Ill be running either a vf30 or vf34 with my robstune.

Re: What turbo?
With the 2.2 I think a VF30/34/39 would have what you're looking for. Good response and power. By factory fitment, they bolt to your up pipe and down pipe, but you'll need a silicone 90*hose to connect to your intake. That's for pretty much all subaru turbos post 1996 or so.
The early 90's td05's make a little more power at the expense of a little response. They can be had with a cast 90* elbow already so you're good there. This is what I have (albiet on a 2.0), and I love it. Makes the td04 feel like a toy.

FWIW I like my TD05-16G and don't feel it added any noticable amount of lag.

Re: What turbo?
I'm really tempted by power, but how long does it actually take a TD05 to build to full boost? With the VF11 asking for power and getting it is almost instant, and that is a dynamic I want to keep.

Re: What turbo?
On Alphius's old SS, his td05 built up 18psi by 2750 rpm. I think his car was in perfect shape to hit that low, though.

But how many seconds to 18psi from pushing the throttle?mike-tracy wrote:On Alphius's old SS, his td05 built up 18psi by 2750 rpm. I think his car was in perfect shape to hit that low, though.

Re: What turbo?
Depends on engine load and rpm before you step on it. I'd better let him chime in here since I only drove his car once or twice.
Another thing to think about is twinscroll turbos. All the Japanese Ver 8 and newer STI's have it. What it does is separate each exhaust port until it enters the turbo, which through some sort of trickery reduces lag by a good amount (500 RPM sooner? is what I've heard), on a VF39 sized turbo.
If you can get the turbo, a full JDM (or ebay) exhaust manifold, and downpipe flange, and compatible oil pan (JDM ver 8+, usdm STI 04+ or all subarus 2006+), then you'd have a rippin fast ride.
Alternately (and something I'm interested in), is Kinugawa (a Japanese company IIRC) makes a twinscroll conversion kit for standard TD05, TD06, VF22's, etc. Here's an example of their TD05 model:

I am looking for in this order of importance:
1. Factory fitment - There is no turbo w/the VF11's clocked outlet, IIRC. You'd have to fab something between the turbo and the thottle body, which is why many (all?) people install an intercooler. See all the Threads on here on doing that. The early JDM/UK TD04 and TD05-16G, and some other VF series turbos: VF8, VF12 (?) also had the 90° inlet like the VF22's.. Comparison:
2. Best Response - The STi's VF39/43/48 is known to be a good compromise between lag and providing more boost. I'd guess your lag would come on 3-400RPM later, but if you get a Rob Tune it may ameliorate that issue. The TD04 is OK if $ is an issue and will have the least lag, but due to all the extra work to plumb any upgrade, I recommend getting @ least the VF39/43/48.
3. Most torque - More about the tune than the turbo. At least for the Subaru turbos that are common upgrades for the EJ22T. There are people w/the TD04 on the 2.5 in the Forester XT making 270 ft-lbs w/a good tune.
I'd also like to run the rob tune route if at all possible: If you go bigger than a TD04, it's highly recommended.

Re: What turbo?
Im planning on an ej20g ecu w/ 550cc injectors and a td05 20g turbo. Obviiusly with a wideband, if thats going to cause me afr problems then i will rob tune my jdm wrx 20g ecu.
Disclaimer, no one else should try this at home. Im only experimenting. If i screw this up, it'd my fault. So if someone else tries this and blows up an engine then goes to rob and says "well cj did it without your tune" he is probably gonna say "he shouldn't have done that and you shouldn't as well."
Just MY 2 cents. Keep it smart, get a rob tune and a td05 16g.
