Td04 upgrade

I'm Planning on upgrading to a td04 and tmic. My question is: will I require a tune after doing the upgrades? How hard is it to swap to a td04 and tmic?

Tune? No. These upgrades are within adjustment limits of the stock ecu.

Ease? Turbo swap will be more work than tmic install, although you are more likely to have issues getting the tmic to fit and plumbed in if you dont have exactly what you need up front.

Advice: soak all exhaust / turbine - side bolts in pb blaster or other penetrating lubricant for 5 mins before attempting removal, unless you are within walking distance of a subaru dealership or have spare bolts lying around for some reason.

Also: the VERY next thing you should probably consider upgrading (assuming you already have a boost gauge and would like moar boost) is the stock fuel pump. Barely enough fuel flow to safely handle the stock setup, cylinder 3 is last in line and often goes lean as it is. Get a walbro 255lph wrx pump and call it a day. Been running 16-17lbs for several years now reliably on that pump and a stock ecu.

The stock 2.2T fuel pump actually is more powerful than a USDM STI fuel pump. Now if you were NA and going turbo, then yes, definite upgrade the fuel pump. Otherwise if you are just doing a TD04, you are probably fine on the fuel pump.

Walbro 255lph aftermarket fuel pump =/= STI fuel pump

I'm gonna have to still raise an issue here, the 22t fuel pump with stock 9psi boost on a VF11 still results in a lean / starving condition in cylinder #3 at times. The margin of safety is just not big enough for my liking, I'd still highly recommend upgrading the fuel pump to ensure you don't have this condition come up. It's pretty inexpensive, I think I got my entire walbro kit for a bit over $100 shipped and it took an hour or two to install.

My 94 22t has a burnt exhaust valve #3 from 200,000+ km of the previous owner driving it in a spirited fashion completely bone stock. The fuel pump was not dead or weak as far as I could tell. Walbro unit is smaller physically but is an excellent upgrade. I can vouch for reliability as it's been in there for 8+ years now and no fueling issues whatsoever.

How can you confirm that? Could have been a faulty injector for all you know.

Just saying, that for the stock injectors, the stock fuel pump is more than enough, hell it's good enough for the 440 and 550cc injectors even! Sure you can go overkill with a walbro, no problem, but why spend money needlessly when you don't have to?

Cant confirm for sure but sure seems to make sense to me based on my experiences.

That injector has not been changed or serviced since then and my narrowband af meter always reads rich during wot pulls now.

Not saying you are wrong but I know if someone raised this issue as a potential flag for safely increasing boost then id be hesitant to trust the stock pump. On top of that, if the stock pump is getting tired then your first indication might be detonation. Its cheap insurance as well as a sensible replacement upgrade for less than a new oem unit so why not...?

Good list except for one crucial component... intercooler.

Edit: td04 optional. Stock vf11 is capable of 16psi.

Ic was more obvious lol. Can't fit the stock boot on the td04 iirc and my VF is a tad toasty lol

TD04, tmic, silicone bits to connect the tmic to the turbo. 90* silicone bit to connect to the intake elbow. *should* be able to reuse the coolant and oil lines.

There's a bunch of pics in some people's threads (check the sticky at the top if this page ;)), that would be a much better way to "get" it, if you're a visual person like me.

I'm more of visual person. Any thread out there with the complete write up and pictures? I'm trying to do this for the first time.
