Turbo install question concerning DP

A quick question about putting in the TD04. My concern is with my DP and the fact that my exhaust system is not bolted together, but welded. Is the install on the turbo going to be possible without being able to pull the DP out or will I have to drop the entire exhaust?

Why would you need to remove the do or header?

I got ya. It has the studs on the turbo and I was thinking I would have to pull the DP off to make clearance for them. Honestly, that was the response I was kind of hoping for. In my mind I didn't think there was enough clearance. So officially the tally is:

You should be able to just unholy your turbo from up pipe and down pipe and lift it out and drop in the td04 and you may need to get a 90 degree silicone hose if it's a usdm td04 or if it's not and has the built in 90 pipe you're good.

I'm not so sure about that. The studs on the turbo downpipe section may not clear the down pipe. You may be able to remove the studs from the turbo, but they can sometimes be pretty well stuck.

I've had my turbo off a few times without removing any exhaust parts. I just pull my down pipe away. Try it out and if it doesn't work remove your down pipe or if it's welded to the midpipe remove the whole thing.

If I am able to slide the turbo up the studs from the uppipe and flex the DP I shouldn't have any problems then? Were the studs off the uppipe a problem for you to maneuver around?
I ended up with a completely (poorly) welded exhaust system which was a train wreck. It is fixed now but it is still welded from DP to muffler. This has been a question I have had for a while so I appreciate the input.

I am guessing removing the studs from the 11 under the hood would be a nightmare if I can't get the flex out of the DP.

Yeah....from experience removing studs from the turbo is a complete and utter nightmare.

Hopefully you can wiggle it out.

This might become a spring project then. Sounds like I might need a few days and some mental prep to get this one done. It took me all day to install my TMIC after all. lol

Thank you for giving me a good idea of what I am in for!

Just going to update this thread in case anyone else is about to do this.

I had one heck of a time trying to clear the studs on the exhaust side of the turbo while pushing/prying back the DP. Save yourself some time and just remove the exhaust first. Takes all of ten minutes as I had 4 hangers to clear. DP will come off and go back on smoothly. I wasted an hour prying and pushing on the DP without ever getting it back on once the turbo was installed.

I was able to get it off without removing the exhaust but would have been way more efficient dropping it initially.

cj91legss recommended a v-band clamp for a welded exhaust for ease of removal below the DP as well. Wish I had gone this route.

The td04 flows a lot better than the vf11 as well. I don't run out of breath on my way to redline anymore and the spool is just as fast. I definitely recommend this upgrade.

What exhaust do you currently have?

I have one 3" vband clamp a couple inches past the lower bend on my dp before the bolt on the transmission bracket.

I have the Invidia bellmouth DP into a 3" high flow cat with 2.5" catback into an sti muffler. I want a louder sound so if I change out the muffler I will have them put in the clamp in the same place as yours.

I wish I had more foresight about a year ago. I was perfectly content with the VF11 and a few mods to open it up a bit. I guess that means I will have to get another SS and do it right from the start!
