project summer DD: nearing completion

Post by 206er »

well actually I'll be riding it as soon as its done-screw the cold

400cc thumper
round slide carb
kick only
magneto-no battery
hardtail
300lbs wet
leaf sprung seat
all parts are stock, modified stock, or hand fabbed from junk. going to have about $600 in the bike when its ready to roll. and hoping for 50-60mpg, may have to go to a mikuni VM carb.

Cool! I've never seen one of those, are they rare?

I'm motorcycle ignorant.

yup, pretty rare. basically they were originally marketed as kind of a utilitarian, everyman's bike, not many were sold. they share the same motor and basic platform as a few of suzukis dual sports such as the sp400 and dr400. they are just a super fun around town hack, and its relatively easy to get another 15 or so hp out of em, they have a needle bearing bottom end the same bearings as a GS1100E so these little motors are pretty much bulletproof. however with a 5sp the top end is not great.
also I havent weighed it yet but I wouldnt be surprised to see 290 or so which is crazy light for a street bike.

here's a stock one with a bunch of gay ass bags:
