Noisy Neighbors?

Post by skid542 »

I'm throwing this out here to see if maybe I've been an a-hole about things.

The people below me got a high end flat screen and 5 channel surround sound a few months ago. Since then they have gotten into the routine habit of listening to music and watching movies with it cranked, including the powered bass. I can distinctly hear in every room of my apt. including my bathrooms. I can even hear it while taking a shower. Keeping in mind my master bath is physically the furthest I can make myself from their living room. When I say it's loud, in my living room I can sometimes see it rattle lightweight, small footprint/slightly unstable, items on my bookshelves. Completely drowns out my TV when the bass hits from the explosions.

I live in a pretty nice complex and these are the ONLY people I ever hear. I'm also paying 700+ in rent per month which means I do work hard for my money and to pay that rent. I also get up at 4:30 in the mornings to go to work where I get to listen to rivet guns and sheet metal working. This means I go to bed a 9:00-9:30.

So, when it's 7:30-8:00 on a weeknight, am I really outside my rights to expect to have some peace and quiet in my living room? I go down occasionaly and ask them to turn it down. It's always meet with resitance and it's a toss up if they actually turn it down. Tonight I listened to it from 5:30-7:10 when I finally went down to ask them to turn it down. Last night I listened to it from 8:30 until I managed to fall asleep after 9:45.

I don't want to be the prick always complaining about the noise, but damn, I'm not in some college/party apt. anymore.

So am I out of line here? Looking for honest opinions.

Are you out of line for expecing a little common courtesy? I would think not, but in today's society... who knows.
A thought, though. Were your alarm to go off, possibly loud enough to be heard downstairs, and you to forget to turn it off before spending an hour in the bathroom getting ready for work, the neighbors might get the idea.

Fight fire with fire.

Get a larger, louder stereo. Play some death metal while they are trying to watch a movie.

Or just take it up with your Landlord.

don't resort to their level of inconsideration... that's like throwing turd at a monkey... may give you a little gratification, but your hand still stinks just as bad as theirs

Talk to your landlord/Property manager. most decent rental companies have rules in the contract about excessive noise. Aslo talk to other neighbors and see if they are willing to go talk to the landlord with you... Power in numbers.

Good luck...

Actually, I think you've been very cool about it. Most neighbors would just call the cops. You've been cool enough to try and work with them about it. I'd say try again, in the nicest way possible to talk with them about it. Tell them what you've said here and if they get in your face or belligerent about it, call the super. If that doesn't work they've given you little choice but to call the authorities, something none of us who love music but also like to be respected, hate to do.

You cant find a house to rent in Idaho for $700? :-D

I think your neighbors lack empathy.

So fuck em, especially after having the decency to talk to them about it personally. They obviouslly dont care about YOUR habitat, so why care about theirs?

Let their inconsideration be their problem, not yours.

And good for you for showing concern about YOUR actions.

Ha!

I was thinking about some apartments I've lived in.

You wouldn't want to crank up the system, because it would advertise that you had stuff, and surelly you would come home to a broken door and all your stuff missing.

No one would have seen or heard anything either.

One other option is to tell the Landlord or front office that you want to move to a different apartment ini the complex, and when they ask why just tell them the neighbors are not compatible with your work/sleep schedule... should get them to start watching closer...

BTW, I think there are provisions for being able to move without incuring additional costs since it is in the same complex.

Thanks for the replies back guys.

I'm glad to hear that I'm not out of line thinking I should be able to have some peace and quiet.

Thankfully, and this is huge, I found out yesterday that they are moving out later this month. Sweeeet!

So now I don't have to mess with calling the landlord and all of that.

Moving to another apt. in the complex really isn't an option - I hate moving and after being in a place for two years it's a lot of stuff to move just to avoid a problem. The other side of that is I'm going to be looking for a house to buy or rent late spring/summer. I ended up where I did because when I moved from VA to Idaho I came out alone without knowing what was around - other than where my new job was. After living in a hotel for two weeks I found this place which is a nice apt., nice building, and quiet neighbors (people below weren't there), and was only 5mi. from work. Now that I have a new job further north, I'm about 45mi. from work... and hence the desire to move north this summer.

Again, thanks for the replies and suggestions. After stewing about things for so long I got to wondering if maybe all my stewing/aggrevation was skewing my opinion of the situation.

Here is what you do:

Step 1: Go buy a really long collectors sword from one of those magazines that sells knives.

Step 2: Buy some badass steel toe boots if you don't already have some.

Step 3: Have the boosts and sword ready by your door.

Step 4: Wait until they are watching a movie that has a women actress. (Hopefully that movie will eventually have a scene where the girl will be yelling or screaming loud or something.)

Step 5: Once you have heard the sound of a woman yelling/screaming throw on your boots, grab your sword, run down to their apartment door and kick it in! Lunge through the threshold wielding your sword in both hands and shouting "IS EVERYONE OK? I THOUGHT I HEARD SOMEONE GETTING RAPED!!!!"

Step 6: Avoid lawsuits.

*reminiscent of that guy on the news that burst into his neighbor's apartment because he thought he heard a girl screaming but it was really just a porno...*

Fin!

But seriously, your best bet is to talk to the guys/girls one on one and explain your situation calmly. If you approach them whilst you are pissed off that's just going to escalate the situation, if they are ignorant enough to ignore your request so far they will damn sure be ignorant enough to oppose anything you request.

or just buy them all some headphones with really long cords to plug into the tv...

I say you loosen all the tie-rod ends on their vehicles. Or not....

They've still been playing their movies a little loud. Not as bad as the other week - thankfully. It's loud enough I can distinctly hear it but I can also tune it out. It's also not quite as frequent so I think they're getting the idea. I've also been taking longer showers at 4:30 in the morning...

I've been hearing lots of banging and clanging so I think they're getting ready to move. Supposedly it's supposed to happen around the 25th - we'll see.

And the tie-rod ends... yeah I can't say the thought hadn't crossed my mind. However, I know I'd about shot someone if I caught them messing with my car and just can't bring myself to mess with someone elses. What I have almost done, the kids leave their shoes outside the doors most days before they go inside... it's still winter time and cold... and a super soaker makes long range shoe wetting a real possibility... :)

Thats just asking for it. But you can't punish kids for their parents' behavior.

Trust me, it's as much of the kids as it the parents. 14-15 yo teenagers....

The only reason I haven't is because the actual son is relatively cool about things. It's his friends that always try to argue with me and act all big and tough. One them actually came up and knocked on my door one evening asking if it was me banging on the floor/ceiling - chest all puffed out and everything. Of course it was me, who the hell else would it be? Was actually pretty humorous encounter.... That was one of the days it was well beyond an excessive volume level.

Ya I was just kidding about the tie rod ends. After my car got messed with about a month ago, I had to inform the person that it would take me two minutes to make it so their car would suddenly swerve into the ditch or on-coming traffic, my choice.

Not that I would actually do that, but when you mess with a car-guy's vehicle, you're asking for big trouble, and I needed to portray that to said individual.

Hoepfully on the 25th your problem is solved.
