That sucks. I think they have it setup where you have to have an account on the USMB to see Off Topic posts. I'll try and save it and rehost.

Is this the new phone GPS tracking? Some people at work were talking about it last week.

No, it's a specific fleet type tracking system

Would be nice to have but I wouldn't want to pay for the service. Plus having people know where I'm at all the time freaks me out.

Jeszek (the guy who posted the story) is a really nice guy, but he's a bit weird, in my opinion... some of his other USMB posts are even more off the deep end. So I'm inclined to call this a bit tin-foil-hat-ish.

The device was probably installed by an insurance company at the previous owner's request, to allow them to monitor their driving in hopes of lowering his premiums to reward responsible driving.

In fact, Progressive offers something like that now, with a device that plugs into your OBDII port and monitors a few things about how you drive, like how many miles a day, and at what time of the day. It also has an accelerometer in it that, according to their website anyway, only records hard-braking incidents, and doesn't know how hard you're accelerating or even if you're breaking the speed limit. However, it does not have GPS hardware in it, and my understanding is that you keep it in the car for 6 months and then send it back, and the data they collect during that time will determine the premium you pay from then on, unless you file a claim or get a ticket, obviously.

I was entirely ready to sign up for it when I heard about it, as I only put around 5,000 miles a year on my car and rarely drive it at night, so I was hoping that would bring my premiums down. But because my car is imported and on a stated-value policy, I'm ineligible :x
