Anyone that has been around knows my first gear is almost dead, Well tonight I lost 3, 4, & 5 for a little bit getting on the highway. Was not mashing on it.

Just thought I would vent a little.

This will be the 5th SS transmission I have killed, Sorry folks. I'm making transmissions harder to come by...

Start using NA cable clutch transmissions.. Atleast they are easy to find and I called a yard up north a while back and they were pricing the gearboxes at around 100ish, lol

Better ratios put less strain on the gears too.

Stephen said it. I'm surprised you haven't gone to a 4.444 yet. I bet you won't break one of those. I can launch mine all day anf not break anything. Cheaper than 5 3.90's.

So I am going to sound like a newb but why does the ratio affect the life. Also I would like to keep the 3.90 due to the better gas but after hearing this maybe not. Side not my FWD N/A has a 3.7 and it is the original tranny with 268,XXX miles and I don't baby it.

Because the lower gear ratio reduces torque on the gears.

That thing's only holding up because it's front wheel drive lol.

Yeah I can confirm the fwd 5sp breaks under a higher load. My first legacy wound up being a ej22t swap for a year before I found a good awd swap to put under it. It was fun to spin the wheels at 30mph for a minute. But having to ease out of every turn like I had a waterballoon full of manure on the dash board got a little old after a while.

How much power are you making? Thats a lot of tranny damage. I had a rebuild quoted locally 5 years ago at around $600 IIRC. That was me uninstalling transporting and reinstalling.

Problem these days rebuilding the Tleg 5mt trannies is the availability of parts....last time I checked there were no main shafts in the country, and no plans on new ones coming. So I ended up rebuilding it with 20 year old parts.

It's all about how you drive it. I never killed an SS 5-speed and had a couple at over 250k original miles.

Yeah this one was freshly rebuilt and had cryo treated 1-4. Still didmt like doughnuts. After breakin tried to whip it aroumnd in a parking lot for less than a minute. After that first gear whined all the time as loud as reverse. Been like that for almost 2 years and the other night it finally told me it was tired.

In my current position i couldnt even save for a 100 dollar ss 5 speed...

Haha, yeah, if you abuse it like that in dry conditions then I'd say no guarantees. Or it was rebuilt wrong since it started so soon after the rebuild.
I used to do that stuff all the time, but only on gravel, dirt or snow. I launched in the dry a couple times at 17psi with wheelspin but didn't do that too often.

If you want to abuse it get a 6-speed, if you can't afford that then don't abuse it and it will last!
