Post by mike-tracy »

Lets all be like Canada and drive GC8 STI's and GTR's! Petition is to change the 25-year import rule down to 15 years.

Petition to repel the DOT/EPA 25/21 year ban

Post by James614 »

I'm not sure how many times this has come up. Possibly a lot. But of all the controversial or inane issues that pop up on the White house petition site, I'd think this one would garner much more support from the enthusiast community than it does, since I'm sure nobody agrees that this law actually helps anyone, besides car makers who refuse to give us exciting variations of their models and still expect to sell eleventy billion.

http://wh.gov/lucgS

As it stands right now, if I were to buy a car in Japan, it would need to be a 92 or older for me to bring back with me in 2017, unless I want to incur exorbitant costs through a registered imported (think well over 10 grand to federalize for safety and emissions, assuming its on the NHTSA list of vehicles eligible to be federalized by a RI). The supply of decent cars that old is surprisingly slim, as local regulations make owning older cars undesirable and they wind up being exported to other parts of the world in large quantities well over a decade before the states can legally lay a finger on them. (Notice legally, people can game the system and once its got a title from a state, its more or less under the Fed's radar unless its a high profile model. But can still be seized and crushed at any time if they find out).

Ah yes, the bi-annual "lets repeal this 25 year rule law!" petition.

It'll go the same way it has always gone. Nowhere.

They didn't get anywhere before because they didn't get enough signatures to even elicit a response. I understand this is a long shot, but so was legal marijuana in my state a couple years back. :)

I signed it, this would be really cool if something actually happened. Even if it was just brought up to the law makers.

It's at 53,244. We've still got 3 weeks on it. Share the shit out of this thing! Even though I can't imagine the Pres actually going against the guidance of the NHTSA/EPA regardless of a petition, it would be awesome to actually illicit a response rather than just be completely ignored.

Petition didn't get enough signatures.

I think the lack of attention is a good thing, because if the law were changed to 15 years, only a small subset of the population would be buying and driving these cars on the roads. Therefore, not causing a meaningful impact on DOT, EPA and any other agencys areas of responsibilities.

It may be a good thing that the impact on their radar is small, but that doesn't help the fact that most of the 25 year old cars in Japan save for a few high-profile models are long gone way before they become legal to bring home :-/

I'm Canadian and I own a 1990 Legacy RS Type RA. I'm one of the lucky ones.

Its still fairly rare to see a right drive car here in Ontario, Canada. We get a few out to Subaru meets and shows.

I know in other parts of Canada its not as bad and out west there are plenty at shows etc..

Very happy I got mine when I did its still loads of fun and the looks I get on the highway or when i stop at lights
