Hey looks like I'll be able to go. I haven't started tearing down the SS engine yet, so it's either my 2nd gen Legacy or my Forester. Finally get to meet some LC'ers I hope.

Well I finally went to my first drive. It was a really beautiful trip with excellent and sometimes challenging roads; the whole thing was a blast except for the lead vehicle wrecking when we were nearly to our destination.

We had made countless stops and other than people burning some oil and one guy rubbing the outsides of his tires bald, the trip was uneventful...until...

On our last stop, right before we were to set off again, a Semi passed us, going the same direction as us. A lot of swearing and grumbling was going on and the radio traffic was talking about "forcing him off the road" (hopefully jokingly).

Well about a minute or so after he went by we took off, and me being in a slower Forester took the last third. Lots of fun twisties, and then suddenly everyone completely stopped around a blind turn.

I assumed we had caught up with the truck, but 5, then 10 minutes passed and we still didn't move. I was completely expecting to be rear ended at any moment. Someone on the radio told us in the rear to find a place to stop - a car had rolled off the road!

Now mind you, up to this point, the drop off beside the road went 1000+ feet to the bottom of the valley. The lead car literally rolled off the road at the ONLY spot where there was a fire road below in the last few miles, coming to a stop within about 20 feet!

Needless to say, that was a spot where there was no reception, so myself and a couple more cars went ahead to find service or the trucker. I found the trucker, and he was able to get the sheriff on his CB or something, and they arrived a bit later.

Here are my pics of the event:

All but 2 of the cars that went along are in frame:

Mine: let me know if anyone is offended by this, the parties involved are not in the picture.

The driver was basically unhurt, and had been wearing his seatbelt. The passenger hit her head, but a nurse that was passing by stopped immediately to treat her, and she was talking (but not moving to protect her neck - standard procedure just in case), and was moved to a nearby hospital as soon as an ambulance arrived to be checked out.

All in all they were very fortunate to roll in that exact spot. Other than a few trees, there was nothing to stop them from rolling to the valley floor - both 100ft in front and behind of where the accident occured.

The driver and passenger were released from the hospital last I heard. Both had x-rays, and passenger got a few stitches.

The Subaru chassis surely protected them from much worse harm. Heard the car would also start right up. ;)

i just got home. i was the 2ns car in the pack. i was hauling ass tho keep up with him after i passed the semi. came around that turn and heard a horn honk. i slowed, but didnt see anything tell i was about a 1/4 mile up the road. looked back saw them on the side on a loggin road. turned around and got to them asap. the car was still running when we got there. got all the blankets we could. disconnedted the battery. tried to get into the trunk to see if he had meth or anything else that could explode. waited tell terra got air lifted out of there than went to morton got food. heard Branden the driver was in the hospital right there. went to see if he was ok. they were in the middle of letting him go.

i feel really bad because i have meet terra before and she wanted to ride with me to take pics, but i had a passenger already. Branden had asked acouple of time if i wanted to be the lead car since i ahve dont that road multi times. i should have gone to the front and this probly would have not happened. Im sorry for it happening. im glad they were both released from the hospital tonight.

cj you could have stopped by i would not have cared what you were driving. wish more leggies had come out. at least there was to of us. redevils car is awsome. im in the picture trying to get my cell to call 911. no reception at all. i think im goin to add a rollcage and a cb to my car.

i watchedthe video that she was taking, and i didnt see how he lost control. the tire marks tell that he braked will turing and fully locked to the right. he shouldnt have drove the way he did on the really shitty tires he had, but its over now. both are alive that is all that matters.

Airgne, I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you. I was getting further and further towards the front (as far as meeting people goes) each stop.

What was weird was that the driver of the truck (I caught up with him since he stopped at that closed ice cream stand further up the road) didn't "seem" to knowing anything about the accident.

When I asked him to call the authorities on his radio, he seemed to know exactly where it happened, however. I got the guy's name - it was Rico (enrico?) Ochoa.

I had just met Branden at the last stop, and we were bs'n about Dave Mirra, Travis Pastrana and Ken Block - some of his favorite subjects I guess. Also he was planning on painting his cool rims with Caterpillar yellow paint he just got. I overheard Terra ask him if he had anyone riding along, and he told her she could with.

damn that is horrible, Its a good thing they are both OK and hopefully insurance will cover their losses. I can't imagine towing prices from that spot.

On the good side, thats the first time I've seen a Baja at a meet!

Head injuries can be tricky. I knew a kid who hit his head in a bike accident and appeared OK until a year later when he just didn't wake up. Hope she's alright. Wheels even look intact. Were it me by myself, I'd pry the fender off the tire and see how far I could get away with driving it.

There's a couple old Legacys there, too at least.

Apparently this is the third accident this year in the North West chapter of NASIOC, and the owner of the club has banned further organized drives in the PNW (with the exception of QMAN4x4's Christmas tree run)

The consensus was
- from the people who don't go on drives: Ban them
- from the people who do: Be more strict about the rules
- from most of the mods: more rules

I don't have an Impreza any more but I still have quite a few friends on those forums. The biggest thing I like about this forum is the general maturity of the people. At 28 years old, I feel old compared to most of the posters at NASIOC with their internet MEME's and the way they talk/post.

Even so I think it is a tremendous loss that the actions of a very few are curtailing the enjoyment of drives for the majority.

I am sincerely grateful that neither the driver in the above picture nor his passenger were severely injured, but their driving caused the moderators to bring these incidents to the forefront, because of it they banned further organized runs.

I hope we never have to make these kind of decisions on LC.

edit: added a well needed 'neither' ;)
