UHEV Legacy Version 2.0

Post by 93forestpearl »

I'm starting this thread now since I've actually had some progress. Maybe move to Build Journals? I'll be updating this on weekly basis, since I only have friday nights to work on it due to 16 credits and two jobs. :(

1st gen Legacy, current mods

Engine: 1991 EJ22T

’99 Imrpeza RS rear VLSD
K4RT30Y rear shifter bushing
Spiider’s Auto DCCD controller

Suspension:

H&R coilovers
RacingBrake 16” 4 pot kit

SuperPro steering rack, lateral link, tranny x-member bushings
Whiteline Anti-lift kit

What's changing:

'98 DOHC heads
Modified (again  ) pipeset
Larger IC
COP
revised fuel system
much cleaner wiring
Opera Tuning style chassis reinforcements
tubular bumper beam
R180 + Hybrid axles
and plenty of other things I may decide to change along the way.

The car previously:

Crunch!

Where I'm at:

Image

Image

Image

Image

This will need to be cut apart, extended for the DOHC heads, flex joint removed, etc.

Image

Opera Tuning is a shop in Japan that uses factory sheetmetal over the top of existing sheetmetal to reinforce the car. I'll be doing this in some key areas since the old Legacy is damn near a wet noodle by todays standards of chassis rigidity. You can see what I removed here. I think there was almost 30 spotwelds on each one...

Image

I pledge allegiance...

That's it for now. There is A LOT of stuff that needs to be stripped from the car. I don't have another car as of yet, but will in late january or early february. There's no shortage of stuff to do right now, so there's no rush on getting a shell here.

Thanks Josh. Not much to show just yet. I want the car stripped and out of the garage before I start on the motor and fuel system stuff.

Dropping the crossmembers with everything still attached makes life easier. If I had a lift, it would be gravy. It sucks with the car on stands and rolling around underneath it.

Plus, it takes about 8 hours with the heater on to get the floor to warm up at all.

I might be buying a car tomorrow. Apparently, it has a little surface rust. We'll see.

No dice on that car. The corners were pretty bad and there was a lot of hail damage, which he neglected to mention on the phone. Oh well. It never hurts to look.

Sure it can—ever seen a schizer video? I thought it would be funny. It wasn't.

I had enough of the fam stuff so I went out to my man-cave. I decided to do a little work to my intake manifold and fuel system.

I did the welding on on the intake a few weeks ago at Matt's place. It is pretty ugly, as I had never welded on cast aluminum before. If I would have known at the time, I would have messed with the balance control to get better penetration. Oh well.

Oh man that intake looks clean. I love the fuel system, so much cleaner and simpler. Would you mind sharing a few of the specifics?

I wish you the best with the 'rebuild' and look forward to seeing everything get put together. You've always had nice installs.

No prob. The regulator is the Areomotive A1000 -6 injected bypass regulator. Pretty much the standard unit when it comes to custom fuel systems do to it's reliability and versatility.

The plate below it is just a piece of 1/16" aluminum I had laying around. I may change the mounting scheme later.

The line and fittings are all Aeroquip stuff. I've worked with Earl's hose ends before, and never will again. They were a huge pain to get started. Plus, Aeroquip is a division of Eaton who is local to me.

The fuel rail adapters are from Outfront Motorsports. They do a lot of sandrails with subaru engines. The adapter can be used on all but one end of the rails, being the end where the factory regulator used to be. On this end, you can simply use a 1/4 NPT tap without drilling it to tap it out to put whatever fitting in there you desire.

I can't put together the feed side of the rails yet as I still need to get a fuel Y-block, and I really can't do it until the intake is on the motor, and possibly in the car.

Thanks for the best wishes. I'll try to keep the whole process well documented.

Grayguy wrote:Are you still running "just" the walraro 255 in-tank pump?

For now. IT is plenty for my particular turbo. If I upsize, I'll go to two walbro's though. I'm currently debating running my own -8 from the tank to the possibly stock filter while it is apart. That's about a $100 decision though.

94SS_Canada wrote: where are you putting the coil? just offsetting it?

I'm going to coil-on-plug, since they bolt on to these heads. The newer style COP may bolt on to older heads, but someone else would have to verify it.
