kleinkids hybrid build journal

Post by kleinkid »

What I am thinking of is, for my '91 Legacy SS, ej257 block, ej20k heads, 550cc injectors, vf-23 turbo, tuned of course, by the Autronic. I like it, should be cool, its happening. Merry Christmas.

What have we told you about thinking?
It can get you in a lot of trouble! :P

It WILL be cool; I love mine, and it's not even tuned yet.

Merry Christmas back at ya!

If you go that route John, go with bigger injectors, 600 or 650's.

I say get the largest injectors you can. Since you'll be using an Autronic, you shouldn't have an issue.

The bigger injectors will give you a safety net if you ever overboost!

Why the Vf-23? If you are doing the hybrid 2.5/2.0 heads, why not push for a larger turbo? 18G maybe? Super 16?

Also I am guessing you are going FMIC, because you will not get much more than 250 before that top mount gets heat soak bad.

The vf-23 is supposed to spool fast, it is brand new, I got it at a good price, it will be fine for my needs. I have been thinking of sending it to Deadbolt for some of the work my vf-12 has.

The David Carter hood on the car has a big scoop and two vents that vent a lot of air in and out of the engine compartment. It's not a track car so heat soak won't be a big issue.

Kleinkid's new powerplant

Post by kleinkid »

Preface to build journal--I have been wanting to do different heads than the stock ej22t for a while now. Last August at WCSS10, Doug suggested that when I did different heads, that the engine block be rebuilt at the same time. Adam suggested that having another block built and ready to go in, is a good way to go. So, melding those two ideas together, has set me on the path for a new engine to go into my 1991 Legacy Sport Sedan. Nothing wrong with the old engine, does have 196,00 miles on it, and the car runs very well, but I have this little itch that needs to be scratched. Know what I mean? The removed ej22t engine will be rebuilt at some time in the future. At this time I will be using an ej257 block (the latest edition), ej20k heads, ej20k intake manifold, vf-23 turbo, DeatschWerks 650cc injectors, and the existing '06 WRX TMIC, and existing Autronic EM. http://www.maxwellpropulsion.com/
has the ej257 block and will rebuild the heads and install them, assemble the front of the engine(sprockets, pulleys, tensioner, waterpump, oil pump, timing belt, and covers I provided, etc. I will pull the old engine, install the new engine, put intake manifold on and do the plumbing and any sensor mod/wiring. As the project moves along I will post updates.

Devan--you could build it for me, but Maxwell Propulsion is a lot closer to my location than you guys are.

Nick--its kind of self indulgent, the car is pretty fast and fun right now, but if you are standing still, you are falling behind. The process of the build/mod is fun also, and I like having fun!

I understand. We have been doing a lot of EJ257 builds this year. I think 7 so far. One sandrail, 5 customers, and my car. Either way, I can't wait to see how it progresses. Hope to see it in person before the show!

injectors, heads

Post by kleinkid »

Got the Deatchwerks 650 injectors and their kit to adapt them to fit into my rails, will post pics soon. Also got word that the ej20k heads have been rebuilt and are good as new. Combustion chambers worked over and will provide a CR of 8.3:1, have before and after pics to post up soon.

Deatschwerks 650cc injector

Post by kleinkid »

This is a Deatschwerks 650cc STi injector that I will be using. With the Phase 2 Adapter Kit, they will plug right into the EJ20K fuel rails. Average flow rate for the set of four is 642cc/min. Won't be using the supplied electrical clips, as the stock EJ22T clips plug right onto the 650cc injectors.
Phase 2 Adapter Kit includes all the parts shown(except injectors) for four injectors, plus 2 extra adapters and o-rings. Color does not necessarily indicate flow rate for the DW injectors.

With adapter installed, injector plugs right into the EJ20K fuel rail.

I used a set of DW 650cc SR20 injectors for two years, and they are essentially the same thing, sans plug. Also, I was pretty rough on them with a 60psi base fuel pressure. Therefore, I bought my 900's from them as well.

+1 for DW

Of course I have not installed them yet, but I am impressed with the quality of the adapter kit, the way it is put together, packaged, and presented. Comes with good instructions. The data sheet for the injector set is nice also.

EJ20K int. mani. powder coat black 80% gloss

Post by kleinkid »

Got the parts back that I had powder coated at North Shore Maintenance, Inc. Burlington, Wa., and they came out real nice, I think. Intake manifold, power steeering and alternator brackets, and a metal coolant fill tank. All sealing surfaces and threaded holes were masked/plugged.
