I can imagine what the conical washer made, but what difference did the sti outer tie rod ends make?

The STi tie rod ends looked identical to the turbo Legacy ones, just brand new condition. They were very stiff compared to the old Legacy ones, and had intact boots.

The steering is much more precise now, most of the slop has been removed, minus the passenger inner tie rod.

The reason I used STi tie rod ends, is I had them laying around from when I swapped the '04 STi steering rack into the RSTi with new Whiteline tie rod ends.

Ok....so "new" Legacy tie rod ends should have produced the same results then....

Yes Josh. Plus, I just disassembled the tie rods again to do the inner tie rod end (had 1/4" of play) and I compared the outer STi tie rod ends to the stock RS ones, which are probably the same as the Legacy ones....same part, no noticeable difference.

On a side note, I was driving the turbo wagon to Denver to pick up my 58K mile 4EAT I had sitting around, and partially blew out the front main seal. It had turned to hard plastic over time. I was able to push it out with my fingers. It was slightly annoying, because I had no way to work on it until I got to Denver. So, I was adding a quart of oil every 60 miles until I got there....smoking like crazy the whole way. Whole underside of the car is coated in oil...even the muffler and the whole rear gate.

It's all good now....after a new front main and cam seal. Timing belt was oily, but I cleaned it off and reused it. DOHC swap in a couple of months, so no worry on that. And I picked up all the remaining stuff for the swap, minus DOHC oil dip stick.

I got the wagon tinted....looks so much nicer.

Also removed the pin stripes.

While in Denver, I swapped over a dent free rear door....you can see the color difference in the pics....need to buff the car. I swapped over a nicer condition rear bumper as well...had to remount the skirt, but no big deal.

Looking good!

Yeah the wagons look much better tinted and not as much like a fish bowl. I need to fix the rear defroster on my Impreza so I can get the windows tinted.

Some RSTi progress. Upgraded to the JDM STi carbon fiber strut tower bar....mostly bling factor over the Cusco unit I was running, and less interference with the TMIC.

I also got my hands on an unicorn item....the X-brace setup which mounts in all stock locations.

Funny you say that, because I broke my defroster prepping the windows for tint. That solder just popped off when I was trying to unplug the contacts.

I did not. It literally happened just before my appointment for tint while I was pre-cleaning the windows. I will have to remove the trim around the back window to get to the contact area re-soldered. The tint is not interfering with the contact area where the soldering needs to happen.

Knock, Knock

Who's there?

RSTi rod.....

YEY!

I started to hear a hollow chattering between 3K-4K RPMs, after the latest HPDE track event at HPR in CO. 4 20 minute hard sessions chasing an Audi R8...constant redlining.

Saw my max oil pressures hanging around 40 psi toward the end of last session.

It is so mild, that it was hard to even tell it is there. Small amount of copper flakes in latest oil change.

I am thinking of capping the squirters once I get in there.

I think there is too much head loss with the squirters plus the extra galleys on the rods. The stock ej22t rods do not have the galleys for the wrist pins and piston lubrication, the squirter takes care of that.

I'm pulling and tearing it down this week....I will see what I discover.

I'm also assembling a stock ej257 for a backup shortblock.

The ej22 & ej22t rods are the same. So are you saying the ej22 also does not have galleys for the wrist pins & piston lubrication?

Josh,

I was told by an engine builder that the STi rods had oil passages leading up to the wrist pin, but have not verified it yet for myself. So I am not sure of the actual differences between the rods. I only have the ej22t rods laying around. I have not had a chance to remove the STi rods form the crank I acquired last week. I will do this soon and do a comparison myself, that way I'm 100% confident of my statements. I might of jumped the gun on assuming the differences based on comments of someone else.

But,

I looked through the pictures of my Eagle rods, and did not see a oil passage from the rod bearing up to the wrist pin, just openings at the wrist pin to the outside of the rod. The openings on the Eagle rod are 180 degrees off of the ej22t rods.

I will do a full comparison once I get all the rods side by side.

I am fairly decided on the fact of capping the squirters this time around.

No videos, but I have some pics I can post up at some point. The R8 was definitely a V8 version because I was gaining on it in the straights at only 14psi boost (~300 awhp)

Not a big fan of the post face for the sedans but it lokks great on the wagons. I love the look of the wagon with those wheels. A set of wheels can really make a or break a car and they look flawless on your wagon.

Thank you sir. I am running the 04 BBS STi goldies at the moment....they look super good as well, but much lighter.

RSTi update.

I tore the motor down this week. Bearings look like they have 500K miles on them. Crank shaft is so worn, there is a hump where the oil passage in the main bearings are. I didn't see any spun bearing, bus still have to take apart 2 rods.

Main bearings #2 and #4 look the worst....that's where the squirters originate.

Cylinder walls look super shiny, almost mirror finish. The pistons are coated with a bunch of carbon...probably due to the squirters dumping oil.

The Eagle rods look like the ej22t rods, minus 180 degree rotation of the wrist pin lube holes.

Still have to disassemble the STi rods, but I'm going to guess the engine builder who told me there are oil passages up to the wrist pins might of been wrong. I will double check and report back.

Pics of carnage will be coming at some point...too busy at the moment.
