The Forester "ej20g" is an ej20k with a different name. It has 9:1 compression and different electronics & sensors and connectors than an ej20g. An ej20g intake manifold bolts on, so it would be an easy swap, but.... The robtune doesn't support it due to the high compression. Ej20k (and Forester) have a centered coil pack on the intake manifold.

As to why the wrx ej20g engine is pretty cheap, my best guess is the majority of swappers have moved on to ej205/7's and ebay sellers just want rid of their old inventory? Why doesn't everyone sell em cheap, that is the question.

Awesome thanks!! Can it be converted to coil on plug, as opposed to replacing the intake manifold?

Oh yeah, the ej20k/ej20g heads are set up for COP, no issue there. Did I miss it and you are going standalone?

Nah you didn't miss anything, I hadn't planned on going standalone unless I have to. I want to do whatever makes the most sense, cost and time wise.

Ah ok. The ej20k engines are better, but not by enough to justify buying them when you already have ej20g.

Ok cool. I currently have no motor, so I guess it could go either way based on what I can find locally?

Here's my thoughts on this: the ej20k (and forester ej20g) have better flowing heads. The intake manifold is interchangeable with an ej20g one. The ej20k manifold has some cool features like under manifold turbo inlet, power steering pump with offset reservoir and other small things.

The wrx & sti ej20k engines have 8-8.5:1 compression, the forester is 9:1. Robs tune will work with the WRX & STI, but not the forester (for long). The ej20k/forester ej20g ecus won't work with our cars at all, without a major wiring harness merge.

The problem with using the ej20k manifold is its electronics don't work with ej20g or ej22t harnesses. You can't swap the IACV or TPS/ throttle body over easily, but it can be done. Kimokalihi and others spent AGES coming up with a solution that involved machining spacers and flipping the throttle body 180* (so the throttle cable comes in on the opposite side).

What I would do is get either a WRX/STI ej20g or ej20k long block and use a WRX/STI EJ20g intake manifold. Our ej22t wiring harness works/plugs into the ej20g electronics without issue (some say you have to extend some wires going to the sensors on the coolant crossover pipe, but I haven't needed to do this in the 3 I've swapped).

Forgot to mention, ej20k intakes have a wierd fuel rail setup, you can't mix and match rails like you can on an ej20g/ej22t.
So to run phase II yellowtop injectors, you need a product like this:

http://www.deatschwerks.com/products/ac ... kit-detail

Otherwise, you are stuck with graytops and phase 1 yellowtops (aka 480cc's).

Mikes just selfish lol, jk. But I feel your pain about bleeding the clutch, I had my 10 year old "help" bleed mine, u know, the job of push the peddle down, hold, and etc. Till I realized she was only holding it half way down. Needless to say, there was a lot of brake fluid puddle afterwards...I want one of those fancy bleeders

Btw, I'm running an EJ20K manifold, and TPS on an EJ20G loom from a 1990 GT. Simply done. You change the polarity, and adjust the angle of the sensor, the 20K TPS can matchb the range 20G ECU's require within their adjustment (both sensors are linear). The only thing you loose is the idle switch. I got around this by using an accelerator pedal with a microswitch on it, you could just as easily put a microswitch on the throttle body. But why would anyone want to do this? Throttle size of course, EJ20K throttle bodies are huge.

Do you have your trip planned out or are you looking for stuff to do? I've been there a couple times and was there most recently in June.

I highly recommend you check this out! You will need an international driver's permit which you can get at any AAA store. I did course B during the day. If you've been to Tokyo before course A or C at night would likely be the most fun because you'll be going through Shibuya at night where there's typically a lot of people. I tried using my gopro the video was a bit bouncy due to the vibration. They do offer body/head mounted cameras and I think that'd be better. They offer a discount in the cost if you leave a review. It was well worth the money and I'll do it again when I go back :)

If you're looking for stuff to do let me know and I can pass along some suggestions.

Safe travels and here are some of things that I tried to do when I was there in June. If you haven't been there before definitely do the normal tourist stuff like Tokyo Tower, Shibuya, EDO museum, Akihabara (electronics meca), Toyota car museum (there's more than one, but I don't remember the specific names), and there's a robot dinner theater place that I've heard is pretty cool.
