And to think. I've picked up these transmissions and moved them around from car to car and spot to spot in my garage. I weigh 150....

Yeah the 5spds are a lot more managable around 125 lbs. The 6spds are heavy at 195 lbs!!

Didn't get much done this weekend. I put some of that gold reflective heat barrier tape on the inside of the turbo's heat shield.

Continued work on the wiring....it's not a glamorous job by an means! I got the harnesses made to go between the trans and AT connectors. I'm going to end up with a cluster fuck of wiring that looks like it's going to impede checking the trans fluid....or at least make a big pain in the butt!

More wiring fun

I pulled the fuel pump & ignition relays yesterday. It wasn't too bad a job with the dash & crash bar removed. I checked both relays and both were fine and had 0 ohms resistance across the contacts. The coil portion of the relays was only 3-5 ohms greater than the brand new relays. I ended up putting in the new fuel pump relay since I used the old one for something else (more on that later), but didn't bother putting in the new ignition relay. Getting it off the bracket would have been a pain in the butt, and honestly, they looked fine.

So, as I may have mentioned, I'm trying to clean up my wiring. When I moved my Hella horns I just ran the wire to a relay I shoved under the dash. Well after yanking out a bunch of relays just hap-hazardly placed I decided to use the old fuel pump relay in the place where the sunroof relay would have gone. This served as a great place & relay for the Hella horns. I cut the connector from an old spare harness I have and wired everything up. I still need to wire up the 12v lead, but will do that as I continue work.

Here are pictures from yesterday's work. There's some good pictures of the various relays.

Well I have some info for those looking to do this swap or use an older 5spd JDM trans with DCCD. If you decide to use the DCCD Pro controller, which I think should be a great controller, my word of caution is around installation & fitment of the controller. The standard length wiring provided does not allow for any easy placement of the DCCD controller behind the dash. The G sensor wire (which has no quick disconnect connectors) will not reach the required installation area near the e-brake.

The only reasonable area I found for installation was behind the stock ECU, however that's not really a great location and would be a tight fit, plus wouldn't really allow you to remove the stock ECU. I'm not sure what others have done that have installed the controller, but I wanted to make sure anyone that is planning to use the controller in the first gen Legacy and plans to put the controller behind the dash requests some additional wiring length be added to the G sensor wiring. In addition, if you plan to install the control knobs on the blank next to the e-brake, request some additional length in those wires as well. Apparently there is a nice place on the Impreza for the controller to be installed, but I did not find one on the Legacy.

What I decided to do was some what unorthodox and probably won't be able to be used by most first gen US Legacy owners. However, if you have swapped to the manual seat belts and kept the US center console setup, I'd suggest installing the controller below that.

What I did was remove all the guts for the seat belt assembly/mechanism, ground/cut off a set of vertical support brackets that were in the way, and then had to have a friend weld the brackets that support the center console. I had to cut the lower portion of the center console support bracket off to fit the controller in there, and without both the top and bottom support pieces the crimped metal connection was kind of loose. So I had that welded and painted everything. I then used a small piece of cutting board as a spacer with some weather stripping foam to keep it from rattling. The controller will be zip tied down once I get the final wiring routed.

This installation location allowed for easy installation of the G sensor with the wiring provided and should be fine for both control knobs. I'll have to extend the power, ground, TPS, & center diff wiring a little bit to reach the required spots under the dash, but that shouldn't be a big deal.

Anyway, what I figured would be a much less involved installation turned out to be an all day project to get the brackets setup properly.

Here are pictures of the setup, which may help clarify things.

Thanks for the info Josh. Unless I can score a black Canadian center piece, guess I'm putting my DCCD pro in my us one.

Yeah, if you get the Canadian center console, then I'm not sure where'd you put the DCCD Pro.

wow that automatic seat belt thing is huge, i never seen that stuff but it sure looks heavy.

i put my dccd pro under the radio section where the ecu airbag would be, or if its the 1991 trim just in front of the shifter like i did my 86 turbo.

Yeah, it's pretty big.

I had thought about putting it somewhere around the radio area, but it didn't really look like there would be a lot of room there. Plus I've got a bunch of other stereo stuff there. I think this location will be alright.

Do you have any pictures of the area you installed the DCCD controller? I can see on the airbag equipped cars there being enough room, but don't think there's enough room on the non-airbag cars.

I mostly finished installing the DCCD controller. I ran all the wiring up to the dash and just need to hook it up. I also tied in the e-brake switch with a diode to isolate the circuits, and redid the connectors.

I didn't like the connectors that were supplied. They had "open" metal spots that could touch something and short out. I picked up some Molex connectors & crimp tool at Fry's. Only issue I had was that the connector I put on for the auto/man button is bigger than the metal ring used to mount the button. So I had to depin the connector and wait to put it back on until the button is mounted.

Here are the pics.

After over a month break (due to various reasons) I was able to work on the car again. I was able to get most of the wiring fitted and connectors on. Everything still needs to be routed. It looks like a mess, but it's a labeled mess! I really like this Rhino labeler I got.

I've got a little more wiring to do tomorrow with the stereo and a few grounding type stuff. Then I'll start on the EDM hybrid combination meter wiring. Plus I've got to match the odometer too.

There's nothing fancy or super interesting in these 5 pictures

Holy butt connectors batman! How much was the labeler and where do they sell them? Sure would be nice to have labeled wires.

I'll have to look back through my emails to see where I got it. I found it for less than the normal retail price and found a good place to get the heat shrink label as well. After yanking wires out and having no idea what they were for, I needed to get something and this was one of the few on the less expensive side that will do heat shrink tubing.

I've always wanted one. There so many wires and a lot of them look the same. Labels would be fantastic. They should do it from the factory.

Ok, here's what I got and where.

Dymo - Rhino 4200 Labeler - $44.95 @ Rakuten (formerly buy.com)
Dymo Case for Rhino 4200 Labeler - $24.75 @ Specialized Products You may be able to find this cheaper, for example, but they didn't have them in stock at the time.
1/4" White Heat Shrink Tube - $24.24 @ 123 Security
3/8" White Heat Shrink Tube - $26.10 @ 123 Security
1/2" White Heat Shrink Tube - $27.96 @ 123 Security

I have run out of the 1/4" heat shrink as that's what you'd really use the most. I'm going to probably order two or maybe three rolls. The nice thing though is that you can get free shipping at 123 security with this code: FREEUPSGR

As mentioned I ran out of the 1/4" heat shrink this morning. I called around and Grainger was the only place I found that had it in stock. They wanted like $38 for it! Needless to say I passed. Everything up there is pretty much the best prices I've found.

Got most of the wiring buttoned up and routed around the dash. There are a few wires that I need to wait until the dash gets back in to work on, but the major stuff is mostly done.

I've started on the hybrid electronic gauge cluster swap and ran across an interesting tid-bit with the VSS out signal. I posted in my electronic gauge cluster thread with more info.

Here are some pics of the mostly final wiring and gauge clusters.

I've been slacking and haven't done anything on the car in about a month. However I wrapped up the hybrid gauge cluster setup today. The last step was adjusting the odometer mileage to match my current mileage. Once I took the circuit board and odometer motor/gear setup off I ended up using air to turn the odometer 95,345 miles in about 115 minutes. (That's an equivalent of about 49,745 miles per hour )

Anyway, I've got a lot more details and info in my electronic gauge cluster thread

Here are the pictures and videos

Electronic Odometer Adjustment & Final Hybrid Gauge Cluster Assembly

The first video shows the odometer turning over to 110,000 miles
