Hmmm I'm confused. I don't see how you would be compressing that spring in the first place without that sorta tool?
I was guessing you already had the correct compressor tool. I guess we just need photos of the problems next time. :D

The valve retainers sit on top of the springs, so the washer pushes down on the retainer which in turn compresses the springs. I used a c-clamp type compressor tool. Everything went pretty damn well, again, thanks for all of your advice fellas.

Took 4 hours to re-install all of the valves. Glad it is over and thank god for that tool I made or else I'd probably still be on valve 3.

Image

The tool gave me enough room to put my finger over the keepers so they wouldn't jump around, all I had to do was compress the springs low enough and wiggle the tool around and the keepers popped right into place on the valve stem.

Now time to clean off the head mating surface on the block and enjoy some PBR on my wonderful day off from work. :D

Prepped the head mating surface on the block.

Image

I really really really wanted to get the heads all torqued down, but no one wanted to help me out. Getting the heads on is definitely not a one man job, especially with these heads because they are heavy and bulky.

Can't you rotate the block 90*?

Yes, but I don't want to take any chances, I just want to be safe and have someone there holding the head in place while I put in the first 2 bolts.

Torqued down the heads this morning according to the FSM specs.

Image

Just have to clean the heads up, tape everything off and get the block ready for paint.

I've put complete 10,000 pound plus diesel engines together with zero help, including very heavy heads. Just rotate the cylinder bank to the up position and set everything in place, no one needs to hold nothin.

oops, looks like you got it done.

Prepped and taped off the engine for paint. Keeping old parts on that you are going to replace anyway makes blocking off the essentials really easy.

Good thing you taped off the lock on that door handle, don't want paint getting on there lol.

Haha, my father did that just so the door can never be locked because we don't have a key for it. All the painting is done in the middle of my yard to avoid overspray hitting anything.

Painted the engine today and began to clear coat the flat red parts.

Primed.

Painted.

I am using a matte clear coat on the flat red parts. It works really well and doesn't add too much "gloss" to the color. If I chose to leave the flat red parts uncleared, they would have absorbed any oil like a sponge. Matte clear is the way to go for flat colored parts.
Image

Once I get everything cleared, I'll mock up the parts on the engine and see how it looks.

So hows the progress? Is it in yet? You did a great job cleaning and painting stuff. Its time consuming isn't it?

Haha yes, very time consuming.

I haven't touched this in a while. Been a little busy patching up the BRAT, and I just started back to full time college this week + working full time. It is going to be a lot harder to find time to put everything together now, unfortunately. All engineering classes this semester, so I really have to make that priority number one.

Installed both valvetrains, cam seals, cam caps, and the half circles on the rear of the heads.

Image

Also installed both valve covers.

Now on to the tedious task of re-assembling everything else.

Mounted a bunch of the intake manifold sensors/electrics.

Image

I was so excited to get this thing together when I realized I am missing a bolt for the coolant crossover pipe which means I can't mount anything sitting above it.

I also need new injector o-rings so I cannot install the fuel rails yet which need to go in before the intake manifold goes on.

I also need all new rear timing belt covers because the old ones were in really really bad shape.

I love this part of putting engines back together - waiting around for parts that you forgot to get ahead of time.

Sooo many wasted days off because I found something broken or missing that needed to be ordered and wouldn't arrive for days. If it weren't for that my project would probably have been completed in half the time.
