Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
I made my girlfriend scream in Mikes car last night when we drove it to the store. Seems like I need to get the ball rolling on my car, I thought mine was fast. Nope. Maybe after I fix this SS and sell it!

Do you have a wideband? I'd make sure you keep an eye on the AFR's if you crank it up that high.

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
I have a wideband but don't have it wired in yet.
I raised the boost from 12 to 14-15 and have a wooly feeling and no more acceleration, despite the turbo holding the pressure. So, I borrowed back my old MSD coil. When I had it before, the coil made no difference with my (now resolved) "spark cut" issue, but the throttle response was much sharper and idle was butter smooth (compared to my current diamond coil).
When the engine was out, I checked my plugs (ngk coppertops of course!) - they all look good, and the gap was 0.035 all around. I know Kimo had success with the stock coil and 0.025 gap but I'd prefer to keep that open larger if possible. If the MSD coil doesn't do the trick I guess I'll try that next.

What MSD coil are you using? Is it just the coil or the MSD DIS-2 ignition?

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
I think I hurt my car today. I was driving "enthusiastically" with a swapped OBS and this pesky black smoke belching turbo-diesel truck, and after doing a few pulls, I got off on my freeway exit.
Car sounded rough after that, but not really down on power, so I drove it home.
When Idling, the engine sounds completely normal, but between 2k and say 4k it sounds like a harsh knock. Sound is coming from under the alternator. When I let off the gas, the noise goes away immediately, so I'd say it's rpm/load dependent.

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
I hope so.
Another possibly random occurance: Last couple days that starter "failed to engage" properly in the morning. After school it would work fine. You could hear its teeth grinding against the flywheel without catching. I looked in there and the starter body is flush with the tranny still, despite missing the lower bolt/stud (I didn't realize I needed phase II starter till the engine was back in and didn't want to pull it again to drill and tap a stud, considering the starter worked fine)

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
Is it because the teeth on the flywheel are in a different position on the clutch setup you have?

No, they line up just fine. The starter is used, and was unknown condition. I think the solenoid was getting tired, and the cold weather was too much. The sound of it not catching and my current sound are radically different.

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
So I got an open deck ej20g/k shortblock a little while back. I have an "extra" set of 20g heads lying around with around 5k miles since rebuilt. Gonna turn it into my next engine for the SS.
I also have a brand new set of ej22t AND phase I ej22e head gaskets in my box of goodies. Anyone know of a reason to not run the ej22e gaskets? The coolant openings are slightly different between the two, but my thoughts are - I'm installing this on an open deck block, not a 22t, so it should be fine. Both sets are aftermarket, made in japan. Thoughts?
I made a graphic from shucks website of the differences (ignore that the 22t pic is MLS):

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
Decided to use the n/a gaskets since I feel they are a better fit for my open deck ej20g/k.
-Pulled my tranny, got the other one mostly in.
-Installed a used oil pan on the block. Ultra black FTW!
-Worked on my JDM N/A EJ25d manifold, installed wiring harness, and injectors. The SS pinks fit perfectly into ej20g rails. Will be nice to have my coil pack bolted up neatly for a change.
* since I really want to go to wcss this weekend (and have paid for a ticket), I might end up reusing my EJ20G manifold, swapping the rails over.
* the plan is to run the stock SS ecu, and a TD04, but I haven't looked at my td04 in a while and I might be missing lines or something. If thats the case I could reuse the td05 at wastegate pressure I guess.

Re: Mike's 1991 Subaru Legacy SS
Put on crossover pipe, oil pump, exhaust manifold, topside DOHC Turbo water pipes I scored long ago.
Worked on intake manifold some more, found that the new style coilpack with the male output leads (97-99 Legacy IIRC) doesn't even come close to bolting on. I had made up a bracket on the old setup for it, as well as a patch harness. Oh well. Back on goes the Diamond coilpack and old style DOHC plugwires.
Lot of little detail work, took me 4 hours to do.
At this rate I doubt it'll be done by saturday.
Still have to swap rear diff & axles, bolt in tranny, swap all the stuff I need off the old engine (water pump, timing belt stuff, misc), figure out PCV and vacuum hoses, resetup PCS, BPV, get turbo on there, install clutch, and a lot of stuff I'm forgetting. Plus put in engine.
Oh and study for a big test on friday.
