I never tried the rear skirt from the 2nd Gen....should be interesting. Is it wagon or sedan stuff?

The side skirts only need to be slightly trimmed for length. Can't wait to see how it will fit.

I put the ECU back into it's holes, and noticed a bunch of unplugged wires behind there. I plugged them all in and now everything works! Well, I don't hear the fuel pump priming, but everything else works now.

Got the remaining lateral link in, as well as the tranny and driveshaft.

I have both wagon and sedan LGT rear lips. The length looks right, but it doesn't follow the contours of the bumper exactly. This is one of those things I won't mess with again till the car is running though.

I decided to put in the DCCD tranny instead of the FXT one, so I did a switcheroo. Not too bad with those harbor freight 6-ton super tall jackstands, and a harbor freight tranny jack.

Found and installed a single diaphram (or was it single stage, eh Josh?) brake booster today. That was a PIA, both removing it from the donor car (a 1995 Impreza 4eat awd ej18), and especially removing my original one. I had to completely unbolt the clutch pedal bracket on my own car, as the bracket slipped down and impeded the bolts going through the firewall.

Bled my brakes today - the rear H6's leaked badly at first. The issue was the hoses weren't going on straight. I had to rotate them down slightly to clear a lip on the H6 caliper. After that they didn't give any trouble.

When taking off the flex plate (engine came from an auto) one of the bolts broke off. It is sticking out maybe 1/32" from the crank's surface.

I start my new job on monday and time to take it to a competent machine shop will be extremely limited due to my new hours.

What would you do.
Take the complete engine to a shop to have them extract the bolt? OR
Say screw it, the 7 remaining bolts are more than strong enough to handle the flywheel.

Or?

If it were me, I would have the bolt extracted. Do it right! If you don't, make sure you get the 7 bolts as tight as you can..

It'll throw the balance off mike, how about drilling it and trying an extractor first?

I would not drill it for an extractor. Too risky. If the extractor breaks off in there you got to take it to a shop anyway at that point. If you have experience in drilling out broken bolts, do it yourself. If you have the trade knowledge and use good shop practice, you know what is involved. If you don't, you will damage the threads in the bore and will be in deep poop. Don't live dangerously, cut your losses now, take it to a machine shop.

If an extractor breaks, you can hit it with a punch a couple times and the extractor will break into pieces. Thats what my machinist told me.

You dont have to drill the bolt out to the threads, or even close. Just drill a small hole thru the bolt so the pressure is relieved on the threads.

I didn't realize how different they were. Since I hvae only owned prefaces. Might have to do the switch down the road.
Also, you put a 6spd in? Or they had DCCD on the 5spds as well?

Like what you did with the tranny mount. Interested to see how it does.

I had to borrow a wagon today to bring the engine to PIA. In exchange I had to replace the exhaust (with supplied parts) and tighten up the e-brake. Before I started, I bought the gaskets at advance auto, and they sold me the wrong ones! Anyways, after cutting the rear half of the exhaust out due to rust, and walking about 12 blocks each way to get the correct gaskets, I got 'er done.

Next I moved on to the Ej22t. I had forgotten that the STI pressure plates use 9 bolts instead of the usual 6, but luckily Jake@PIA reminded me and I bought those and a brand new turbo coolant drain hose. I swapped the coolant and oil hardline from the vf11 to my td04. The coolant lines have a cheezy metal tab that you have to snap off, cause the spacing is different between the two turbos. The turbo oil feed on DOHC engines goes to a slightly different spot than an ej22t, but as I mentioned they are directly swappable.

On to the pics:

I'm so happy I am able to use all 8 crank/flywheel bolts! Torque specs for flywheel bolts are ~54 ft-lbs. Pressure plate bolts are ~12 ft-lbs.

Also notice the white balance dot at 9 o'clock. The pressure plate is also balanced, and you are supposed to (as best you can) put the balance point on the direct opposite side to the flywheel's dot or mark. On my flywheel there was a blue dot, but in the past I've seen a welded on metal rectangular tab (about 1/8" wide) for the mark. Other flywheels I've seen had a welded on weight, or one or several holes used to remove material as their mark.



If you were wondering where you need to grind on your 5mt tranny to use a 6-speed STI clutch setup, here it is:

Replaced the rear main as well - I've always had seeping ones on each older engine I've wrenched on, and this was no exception. I got the engine in tonite, and it gave no trouble at all. I'm either getting good at this or got lucky and I'm jinxing myself lol. Thats all for now.

It's a single diaphgram, no such thing as single and dual stage boosters :)

Yeah I had to do the same thing with the rear B4 calipers I installed on my Legacy.
