dankberries 1993 Legacy SS

Post by dankberries »

My daily driver that gets lots of love.

Picked this thing up as a mechanics special, the people I purchased it from couldn't get it running. $800 picked up, not to shabby.
Image
Within 30min. Of getting it back home I had it running again with a new coil pack.

LGT snaflakes & 1in. Spacers
Image

Then one day I came out of Buffalo Wild Wings to find this:
Image
Shitty. So I decided to play with plastidip.
Image
Image
Image

At 180k the engine started having engine failure. I did a rebuild. Stock pistons with new piston rings. Stock rods with ACL bearings. Sock crank with ACL bearings. Bleed all the hydraulic lifters, lapped all the valves and seats. Tanked the heads and block. DIY resurface job. Subaru OEM head gaskets. ARP head studs. New seals everywhere.

Shortly after the refresh I did a td04 turbo and FMIC upgrade. GC8 huge FMIC custom fit.

Image
I made up a crappy intake with spare parts until I could get something fabbed.
Image
Image

Fabricated intake thanks to Mofab LLC.
Image
Image
Image
Upgraded rotors and pads.
Image
Image
Then I got t-boned by a deer. Picked up replacement parts from the local junkyard.
Image
Image

Auto transmission failed September 2014. 195k.
Image
5 speed swap. 2001 forester S donor car. 4.11 FD
Did new seals on the trans and diff.
Image
Image
Image
Had trouble finding a drive shaft that would work. The donor forester drive shaft didn't mount the same at the carrier bearing.
Image
This 1990 legacy drive shaft worked for length but had a different 4 bolt mounting patteren at the diff.
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Custom access hole for transmission bracket. Welds on the nut broke.
Image
Had to swap out diff studs. Short and long difference.
Image
New slave cylinder with goodridge SS clutch line was rubbing on the IC piping so had shorten the pipe a little.
Image
This really sucked. I actually got the transmission stabbed(splines aligned and in) and started the bolts before realizing that the new tranny had guide pins stock on it. The ej22t also has guide pins. Two male parts touching NOT OK. Had to take it back it out and pull the pins and start over
Image
I also did the throttle body coolant line delete. It was now rubbing on my IC piping so I had no choice.

I found this spring on the floor of my car. I think it fell out from some where near the HVAC controls . I noticed it when I was taking out my AT shifter. I'm wondering if its associated with HVAC clicking noise I have sometimes.
Anyone recognize where this goes?:

That spring is one of the two that go on the ebrake setup. Betcha the previous owner bought one and lost it back in the day ;)

Today I swapped out the factory leather interior for the cloth version that I had installed in my impreza. I installed a 2002 wrx driver seat. Couple hick ups with the seat belts but got it figured out.

I also picked up a 98 LGT rear skirt for testing:

:-D I'm super excited to get my EDM head lights in the mail! They shipped a month ago from Poland. I've been dreaming about the journey they must endure to get here :smt020 Im envisioning my head lights on the back of a pack mule crossing over the Tatra Mountain Range :smt033 some brave postal man is fending off snow yeti's :smt063 soon enough they will be here in CO :smt023

Just getting past the winter solstice here, sun up @ 7:20am - sun down @ 4:50pm. I drive with my brights on all the time because my lights are so shitty. I'm really needing this upgrade for my safety.

Also, I emailed a letter to the Depo light company with some part #s and a request to manufacture a glass lense for pre & postface headlights . I'm doubtful but it seemed like it was worth a try.

Hooray! My EDM headlights are finally in!

Assuming these two book ups are auto controlled levellers and day running lights.
Maybe someone can hook me up with a link on how to get these hooked up:

Did they come with the euro corner lights? Curious if they fit flush with the USDM corners.

Also curious on the price you paid, PM me if you are more comfortable with that. I have a line on some from a guy in Europe and I just want to make sure I pay him a fair price.

I'm not sure if I can adjust the corner light any(didn't have time today) but I don't have flush fitment:

Regarding the wiring diagram for the levelers, this is one I made when I got my lights. It should be the same if it's a six-pin leveler motor.

http://main.experiencetherave.com/subar ... agrams.pdf

The city light you can just tee into the corner light wiring unless you want them to go on with a separate switch, and then you'll need to run wiring to them.

On the fitment of the lights, it looks like the headlight is pushed back too far. How did the mount points and everything look compared against the USDM light?

Very interested and anxious to understand what the fitment issue is, and how it can be remedied, with the USDM corner lights. I have a guy in Europe that has a set of EDM glass headlights (maybe two) that he can ship to me immediately but I don't want to pull the trigger until I know this is possible without the Euro corner lights. Your help and more detailed photos ASAP would be greatly appreciated.

Here is the difference in the lights:
Image

And this is likely why the bottom sits out:
Image

The solution is to cut the "hook" off of the corner light. It's a tad looser without it, but it still stays in place and looks just fine. Then you can begin the search for the proper Euro corner lights.

Thank you PhyrraM !!!!!!! That's EXACTLY what I needed.

It look like if someone were patient, the "hook" on the USDM corner light could be cut down and reshaped to fit the "loop" on the EDM headlight. Do you think that is possible?

Sorry if I am jacking your thread Dankberries.

I guess if you're able to cut off that hook and reattach it to the EDM lights with epoxy that may work.

If you modify the EDM lights at all then you're stuck with running the USDM corners, unless you want to modify the EDM lights again later. Seems to me that modifying the USDM corners will allow you plug and play EDM corners later if you ever find any.

I've been rather side tracked and haven't put much time into the fitment of the USDM corner light and EDM headlight combo. However I did take a quick glance and photo to confirm PhyrraM's hypothesis:
Image
This is indeed the problem at hand. My phone took this sweet picture for verification.

On a different subject, I'm super stoked to have passed emissions recently with flying colors! Last time I had to do it my car was having trouble passing. The recent rebuild is likely a contributing factor.
Image

I wanted to note some things about this test experience. For one, they never opened the hood to look at the engine bay(I even popped the hood lever for them upon approach) for two, they never grabbed any mirror checkers and looked for a cat or o2 sensor under the car. And third, no gas cap test... seriously wtf.. I've gone through hell before with emissions places!! I can't believe I just got a walk through the park.
Apparently from what I've heard from several people , recently things have changed at the emissions place. Kinda sounds like in an effort to speed things up, they will no longer pop hoods or scope for cats. They look at codes(check engine light) and a smog test.
Either way... bad ass!! Having engines that don't belong in cars has always been a hassel at emissions! (Sr20 240, 2jz 240, turbo 93 impreza)

The struggle is real! This car was running so tits for a min. Then the last couple weeks have been rough.

Lower radiator hose goes out two days ago. Then this morning the upper hose broke! Wtf!
Then I'm having these engine running problems.
Everything is failing on my car all at once, its rather stressful!

200,000 birth mile party!

Image
Image
Image

New motor mounts, steering rack, outer tie rod and tie ends, lower control arm ball joints, and brand new KYB AGX!

Image

Had to source different mount plates for the difference in circle and square styles. Junkyard 5 finger discount.

New and Old mount

Image

Found new KYB AGX on JEGS for $469 shipped, great deal

Image

Off with the dip!

Image
Image

The plasti-dip removal went well in areas where the paint/clear coat where in good shape, however area's where the clear coat/paint where flaking/coming off...went terrible. in the bad areas it would only come a flake at a time, i was unable to pull large single sheths like in the image. I eventually sanded most of it off, which is an O.K. method if you plan to repaint the car. Getting into small tight spaces is almost impossible to get all the dip out, it took hours of work.
Now had I properly prepaired the surface before dipping(i.e. sand all faking clear coat) it would have been easier to remove.

Lots and lots of body work! Discovered old body repairs and made many more. Bondo and more bondo.

Image
Image

Seriously hard to find a legy without this problem:

Stance :-) 245/40/17

Image

After weeks of searching I finally found clean fenders:

Image
Image

It was very difficult to pick a color for this car... but in the end I came up with something im happy with.
Imperial Jade Green mixed with forest green and then gold metalic flake added.

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Still in the midsts of finishing a few things up. Cant decide on Gloss black, Flat/Matte black, or green bump guards. Body work is like this never ending perfection.. at some point I just have to throw the towel in and call it good. Must remind myself Its a daily driver not a show car lol. Really happy with the way it looks though. Likely to hang on to this car for sometime.

Hopefully will have some better pictures to share soon..
