robertpaige's 92' Legacy SS - build

Post by robertpaige »

Hi guys,

I'm here with a new build. One of the most extensive I've ever done. A lot of you know me from having multiple (six) Legacys haha. Well I finally found a keeper. This time for good!

The beginning: I sold my last 94' SS to buy my current 92'. Some of you remember this car... 5MT, TD04, FMIC, lowering springs, etc.

Image

Off to the new owner!!

Image

So I sold that for $3500 as it sat, and picked up my new car for $3200. The new car was 92' SS. It had 189k on the clock with an EJ22T and turbo trans. The car was a daily driver of a friend of mine, until he parked it to install a RobTune. The RobTune install ran into issues with spark, after trying and trying they couldn't get it to run. He bought a 2005 LGT and this was left in a shed for 3 years till I bought it. It came with brand new wheels and tires, BC Coilovers, a TD05-16g, RobTune'd ECU, 550cc injectors, and JECS MAF.

I ended up selling the whole RobTune setup just to get the car running and driving. I needed money for all the little parts, so I am buying everything over again.

The day I got it, all loaded up.

Image

Much needed bath!

Image

So the RobTune wouldn't fire. Only 1/2 cyl had spark. Traced it to the ignition converter being the culprit. Even redid my timing and everything. So I put the stock rails and injectors back in with a stock ECU and was able to get that running. Ran great. Leaked a bit of coolant but seemed to stop. Has continually leaked oil since then, my guess is old seals and separator plate is cracked.

Some BBS action

Image

So the TD05 runs at 11PSI nicely. I have driven about 6k since I bought it and now it's time to make some moves!

Clutch is slipping really bad and the FMIC piping is all hacked up. So I'm ready to pull the motor and do a reseal and cleaning. Here is my list of parts I am purchasing on ThursdayImage

I luckily have a shop in Oregon City called SSI that I can work at. So I'll be tearing the motor out to replace the clutch as well as replace all the bad PCV lines and the oil pan seal.

The car sits with a Voltex diffuser, 3rd gen Legacy 3rd gen skirts, STi lip and corvette wheels. [emoji41]Image

Thanks, Josh!

Well today will be purchasing a lot of stuff. I found an ESL board from Kimo, and I may decide to run that after awhile.

My plan is to use the RobTune setup to get everything broken in, or until this motor needs to be replaced. Then when I decide to do a bigger turbo, and either 850cc or 1000cc injectors, I can tune for that. For those of you that don't know, the ESL board is installed into the 20G ECU and then a cable is plugged into the Subaru SelectPort plug, which then allows you to openly tune the ECU. I think once more info becomes available this will be a huge step for these cars.

Looks like a great project! I'd like to know more about this esl board/ cable, and what ecu is that out of?

We baked them, split them apart and taped them off. Then baked them again and pressed them together.

If you swap the igniters does opposite two fire? You do have the "dummy" igniter plugged into the normal spot in the engine bay, right?

Mike I haven't tried swapping igniters yet. And yes I used the dummy igniter. I actually just bridged the wires, didn't actually guy the igniter. I'm gonna do that today, just a cleaner option

Gonna put the RobTune in my buddy car, with the modded igniter just to see if his car will start.

Robert,

Did you get the Robtune to work? If so, what was the problem?

Yes I got it to work. I made a gutted igniter, instead of just splicing the wires together. I plugged it in and it fired up on all 4. I also had a clogged injector, which was making it rough also. All is well now, car runs great
