Paynter's 1993 RHD Legacy Wagon build

Post by turbo_gc8 »

Hi! I've creeped these forums for a long time and have decided to actually make a build thread now that I have a Legacy.

My car is a JDM 1993 Legacy Wagon

Image

When I picked it up from ten previous owner, it has been very badly assembled. For some reason the EJ20G was removed and an EJ22T long block dropped in its place. The wiring was a disaster supposedly has a Rob 550 tune. After taking the ecu out I realized it didn't and had been running 550cc injectors using the 440cx oem tune.

I ordered an ESL daughter board, installed a VF48 turbo as the original turbo was pretty noisy, installed a TBE and a FMIC.

I bought it for a beater originally but after driving it for a few months I began to fall in love with it.

I decided if I was going to do this on such a neat car, I was going to do it right. I ordered a set of Darton Dry sleeves, wiseco 99.5mm pistons, 2012+ heat treated crank, Haltech, 2200cc injectors, Borg Warner S366 turbo, and dug out a spare set of D25 heads I had around. I also picked up a V7 6 speed local from a friend and 6 puck Comp clutch.

I ordered a bunch of other parts as well but am waiting on them.

Just picked my block up from the machine shop the other day

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but do the sleeves protrude from the deck? If so, how is that going to affect your head gasket sealing between the cylinders and the oil/water jackets?

The do, it's about 0.001", as per Dartons recommendation. The machine shop contacted Darton and they told them to as it seats better apparently, using JE or cometic gaskets. You can just feel the lip with a finger nail. I also double checked with Darton and then with a feeler gauge to confirm :)

Little update today:

Started to remove everything from the bay I didn't need and clean things

Image

Pulled the JDM 5 speed and rear diff out to make room for the 6 speed gear

Image

Pulled the dash out so I could get the wiring harness out to strip what is no long needed and get ready to wire in the Haltech

Been a little slow going as I'm still waiting on my damn cometic head gaskets to finished getting my engine together

In the mean time I clean the bay and removed the rest of what I wasn't going to use. I also installed the 6 speed

Image

Also finished the bulk head harness with just the wires left that I'm going to use to wire the haltech.

Image

I also started the engine harness, removing things I'm not using and adding things I will need that arent there

Image

Also ordered up a couple sets of OTL coil packs for the Legacy as well as buddies 2012 GT3582R STI.

We decided to compare turbo sizes for fun

VF48 on the left, Garrett GT3582R in the center and the BW S366 that's going on my Legacy wagon on the right

Got the engine in but it hits the hood currently so I need to fix that unfortunately

Made all my fuel lines

Image
Image

Mocked up the turbo to get an idea where I'm going to need to cut and ram the haltech wiring
