Jonah's 1993 Subaru legacy LSI

Post by meatball671 »

Hey everyone, havn't posted to this forum in a while, but we recently came across a neat legacy that I thought would be worthy of it's own build thread. To start off the car is a 1993 Subaru legacy LSI wagon with tan paint and tan leather interior. The car also came with the airshock system. Everything was in the car except for the air struts. I'm assuming everything would work, but were going to be taking it out of the car.

One thing I noticed was that it looks like they used alot more seam sealer in the car idk kinda wierd, also the paint on the car was in pretty good shape.

When we bought the car it ran and drove great. The previous owner took pretty good care of it, the car was his daily driver.

So my brother had a 05 Forester xt that was rusting pretty bad, so we decided to take the engine from the fozzy and put it in the legacy with a 5 speed. My bro plans to refresh the engine, and do some minor mods to it. IWIRE is going to do the harness merge so everything will be pretty much plug and play, they also sell a DBW pedal adapter so it can bolt in to the legacy.

First we cleaned the enigne bay, so we could cut the holes for the clutch master and install the non-abs brake lines. We had to drill new holes for the bracket that goes to the rear, these brake lines are from an impreza but they fit pretty well.

One other thing to note was that the ecu looks alot like a ej20g ecu, So I guess anyone with a robtune could use a n/a ecu case. I thought that was kinda cool lol.

Image

So that's pretty much where were at now, gotta send the harness's to iwire to get merged, and start doing some mods to the engine. I also ordered a quarter panel from Subie Savers, so that should help with the rust repair. Can't wait to see this thing on the road, and thanks for taking a look at our new project. :D

Jonah,

Looks like a fun project!

It does look like there is a bit more seam sealer on this car....

The other thing I'd suggest is removing the damper from the clutch master cylinder. I did not like how the clutch felt on my 2007 Impreza which had the damper in the master cylinder. It can be replaced with a drain plug bolt. I'd suggest doing that...you may need to take the clutch master cylinder out again to do this, but it's well worth the effort IMO.

This tutorial is pretty good and tells you what you need. I found that there was no additional damper in the slave cylinder so you likely don't need to do anything with the slave, just the master.

The panel from subie savers came in, and we started working on the rust repair. The quality of the panel is great, and it was easy to weld.

Today we mocked up the new koyorad radiator. The radiator sticks a inch and half to tall, so we modified the bottom mounting plate to fix the height issue. We cut the top of the bottom rad support and welded new peices in, and used seam sealer.

Fun stuff. This is kind of a unique swap. I haven't seen a Forester swap into a 1st Gen yet.

I second the clutch damper delete. On my SS, I just removed the damper and ran an SS braided hose in its place.

Sorry for not posting in awhile, I hope everyone is doing well during this time. We got the harness back from IWIre, and they always do an excellent job merging the harnesses. Everything was high quality and went right back where it was suppose to. We also got the engine buttoned up with the TGV deletes and few other misc. things, but so far everything is going back together smooth.

Image

New oil feed lines for the turbo and AVCS

Image

This is where we mounted the fuel pump controller, we had to modify the mounting bracket to make it fit under the dash

Image

We had to cut a hole in the grommet going through the driver side fender to fit the harness for the engine plugs

Image

The harness pretty much mounted the same way in the engine bay, just had to run the connectors for the turbo engine sensors

Image

This is the drive by wire pedal adapter that IWIRE makes everything bolted up with no problems

Image

Image

So the way iwire did the harness was they got a jdm harness for a ej255 and merged it with the legacy harness so the plugs would stay in the same location. they offered the option to put the ecu in the passenger foot well, but we opted to keep the factory routing

Image

We also had to make the ej255 ecu fit in the factory location, so we took the mounting tabs from a n/a legacy ecu and welded them onto the ej255 ecu case, it's not the prettiest thing but it works.

Image

Image

Image

we made the boost controller bracket fit to the first gen

Image

We were able to get the dash back in the car today as well

That is awesome work! I love how everything more or less fits back into the right spot.

If I do another swap I'll have to consider using their services. Do you mind how much they charge to do this?

I think it was around $1,500. The Legacy harness is definently more on the expensive side. They had to source a jdm harness which i think was $400, but it really all depends on what engine and trans you're swapping in, and all the other options you want to put in. I think it was around$850 to do my impreza. Just a fyi i guess subaru stopped making the cable style speedo replacement piece that goes into the trans. We were unable to find one. If you are gonna do a swap have them do a cluster swap, so you can use the newer style vss. But yeah iwire can basically do anything you want them to.

How did you go about wiring in the fuel pump controller? Have any pics from that?

Sorry for not keeping this build thread updated, I've been super lazy with taking pictures and documenting stuff. To answer your question Iwire does all the the wiring for the fuel pump, you just have to run a wire to the fuel pump harness ground under the back seat. I was thinking about making a video about the car and where it's at, but the car is finished, I just never documented anything.
