Tyler's 1992 Legacy Turbo EJ207

Post by tkammen »

I'm Tyler and this will be the story of swapping a 207 and 6 speed into a 1992 Legacy Turbo. The Legacy has around 82k original miles on the auto and EJ22T. I plan on taking the V9 207 and V7 6 speed from my 2005 WRX and putting them in the Legacy. I am taking the whole WRX mechanically and swapping it into the Legacy.

Plans:
V9 EJ207
V7 Non DCCD 6 Speed TY856WB1CA
GD Subframes
GD Fuel Tank
Stoptech BBK
FHI 2 Pots

Coilovers

I would like the car to have air conditioning, oil cooler and not sure on the intercooler yet. Either stay top mount or go front mount. Once I get to that point I will decide. I might swap out the automatic seat belts for manual ones if I can find someone to source me some.

It's going to be a slow and interesting process. I've had both of these cars for over five years and I have always wanted to do this. I moved the cars next to each other on 6/2 and will be starting to take the interiors apart to get the wiring harnesses out. Zephyr will be doing the wiring merge.

The swap was started with this mileage on the car.

I shuffled both cars over in the garage to have more room to work. I started removing all the interior in the Legacy to be able to pull the wiring harness out. I didn't break one clip. Pretty stoked on that.

I found the A/C drain tube was not attached properly. Looks to have leaked some water but not for long fortunately. Since I bought the car the A/C has never worked. I actually removed the compressor when I got the car.

June 21, 2020

I had some friends come over and help with the disassembly. We removed the complete wiring harness along with the front end of the car. Next is shifter and then we can drop the engine along with the transmission and front subframe.

Got some more progress done on the car. Removed the engine and transmission with the subframe.

Also got the rear subframe out. Next weekend will be removing the fuel tank.

After celebrating this weekend a friend and I removed the T brace and fuel tank. The fuel tank had about five gallons left in it. We hotwired the fuel pump to drain it all out. It was a blue with yellow stripe wire for positive and a black wire for negative. That's all we did for now. Crazy to see all the undercoat on the car.

The car will live on jack stands for now. I need the quickjacks to start removing parts off of my WRX.

I bought an 04 WRX harness for the merge. They have been dropped off and should be one soon!

I did some work on the WRX yesterday. Removed the radiator and got the clutch master and slave off. I am just waiting on a friend for the pedals assembly for the Legacy. Then I can mount up the master. Its been so hot and it's like an oven in the garage so work has been slow.

Yeah, I did some work on the Outback the other week and it's HOT and no fun. I've got a garage fan that helps, but it's still hot.

August 30

Some friends and I removed the rear sub frame, fuel tank, engine and transmission this weekend. We first drained as much fuel as possible. Made it a lot easier to drop the tank. Everything came out pretty smooth considering we had to raise the car up a few inches with a forklift to pull the engine out.

My friend and I put the wiring harness back into the Legacy. For the most part it's pretty straight forward but some of the wiring under the dash still needs to be done. My friend is going to bring her 91 Turbo over so I can see how her wiring is ran. I have ordered a bunch of parts for the fuel system and some new avcs solenoids for the 207. Slowly but surely going back together.

Not on the ground yet. Lost motivation after getting the harness back. The WRX will be leaving the garage soon so I'll have room to start getting the Legacy back together.

The WRX tank has better baffling inside. I also think the wrx tank is a little larger but not positive.

Sort of a sad update. Haven't touched the car in a long time. Lost interest but hoping to get back working on it soon.

My friend and I worked on the car a little. I plan on moving garages so the car needs to be a roller. We put the GD fuel tank along with the whole rear end from my WRX in. With some wheels the rear will be a roller. The new garage has high ceilings so I am in the market for a lift which will make this a whole lot easier.

How did the GD fuel tank fit? Does everything line up?

The fuel tank isn't fully in. Just bolted up to the shell. I did compare the tanks and lines and everything should work the same. Some of the evap stuff obviously will not work but I plan on removing all of that anyway.

I picked up a 9K Rotary lift on Saturday. Hoping to have it installed in a week or two. I have an electrician coming tomorrow to add some 120V and 240V outlets to the garage.
