Saab 900 worth my time?

Hey i'm new to posting around here, but have been reading pretty religously. I recently won a saab 900 ic all aluminum 10 fin off ebay. I know that this is one of the rare euro editions, but was wondering if its worth going through the install process or should i sell it in exchange for an 06 wrx tmic. I know that the wrx version is more efficient, but i'm only planning on about 12 psi max. This is probably in some thread somewhere, but i assume that you still have to move the ignitor and i was wondering if moving the coolant tank is nessissary with the wrx ic. It's nipples are sensitive. Thanks

Yes, it's worth it. I started with a Saab 900 and it worked great. I ended up going to a MY03 WRX i/c and it did a better job at cooling but I had a larger pressure drop across it then the Saab.

Yes, you should still relocate the coolant tank either way....

Nice. The saab it is. I just had a couple more questions. I was thinking about leaving the coolant tank in its current location, but rotating it so that the nipples face the driver side strut tower using the existing bracket. Would this work or should I move to a different location. Also I'm trying to find a cheap, non ghetto way to fab up the plumbing. I saw an instance where someone used the ic piping from an 80's volvo 740. Is this a good route or should I have something made. Any ballpark idea of cost on a custom one? Much appreciated.

I have a write up somewhere about the coolant tank. What you do is push the metal insert out of the top hole so that the bigger bolt fits through and then turn it towards the ds strut tower like you said. This lowers the tank slightly and takes all the pressure off the nipples.

When I did my Saab 900 I just fabed a piece of exhaust pipe with a bung for the DV and then went to Advanced Auto Parts and bought some heater hose for the adapters on the comp outlet to i/c inlet plumbing and then got a silicon adapter for the i/c outlet to tb connection. I don't recall the measurement because it's been years since I screwed with it but a quick search should net multiple how to install threads about the Saab i/c.

I think I paid about $35 total for everything to do the install.

Of course the Saab 900 I/C will have better results than a non I/C system, and someone has already done air flow testing to show the WRX I/C is more efficient than the Saab.

I went from the SAAB to the 06 WRX IC. While the SAAB is a nice cheap starter mod, the 06 fits better and gets more cool air when you remove the stock hood baffle. 12 psi or not, the 06 is the better way to go.

But either way requires mods. The SAAB unit is easier to install with fewer mods.

You have to ask yourself what are your goals and how much money do you want to spend.

Why do a mod because "Guys on legacycentral said it would be good"??????? Not everyone knows everything.

So this is a low compression DOHC EJ22T with a td04 and wrx TMIC running 8 PSI on a Dyno Dynamics dyno. Totally useless in the this tread, but Dont say something is good unless you can prove it.

Thanks, now I don't have to waste the money on a baseline dyno pull. I was wondering what my setup puts out (basically the same, except w/ v.2 slant mount).

A stock EJ22t makes 165chp, right? Now we know what the improvement is. So, not completely not completely useless.

From "Seat of the pants" experience I can say that this is most certainly worth the 1/2 day it takes to do......however, if you want real benefits you must upgrade the intake and exhaust as well as add a boost controller. These additions will give you the real benefit of the SAAB install. I was running 170hp (wheel dyno) on my 1st gen neon rt with a 2.4 swap N/A + goodies and I can say with certainty (since a buddy of mine is still running the same car with similar mods as I had) that my '92 Legacy most assuredly runs circles around his '02 2.4 swaped neon rt. Do it, youll love the fun factor to $$ ratio and if you want more down the road, there are plenty of others here who have yet to make the transition to IC and will scoop up a nearly complete kit as it did.

Bull shit. I can say it's a good mod with complete confidence. I ran stock, then I installed a Saab 900 and it was noticeably better. Plus you have many other people saying the same thing from their experiences. It is a worth while mod, to say it isn't and that people shouldn't post up their experience with the mod because they don't have a dyno sheet is the stupidest thing I've ever heard on this site. I mean, give me a break, how many people even have access to an AWD dyno within driving distance of their house? Not many, that's for sure. I could see you bitching if people were claiming actual concrete performance gains in numbers but they aren't, so chill out. :roll:

never ended up happening. the douchetard that i won it from never came through and i never got a refund. oh well. at the moment my leggy is still intercoolerless... my plan now is to try to round up an FXT ic or 06/07 wrx ic. i would like to get a td05 and do the install at the same time. just need to make some time and money.

Just thought I'd show off my completed project. Thanks New92 for the ic! I also replaced the coolant tank with the wrx version. I can say now from experience that it is an absolutely worth while mod. Sooo much better than stock. I turned the boost up to 11 and shizza is there a big difference!

What did you use to make the 90 to the turbo out?

And where is your charcoal canister?

Oh, and you really ought to "mug" it now, the benefit in throttle response will be quite noticeable.
