Intercooler Mounting
How are you guys mounting your intercoolers? I noticed there are mounting tabs on them but I don't have the proper brackets to bolt them to. Will they fit my engine if I find some off a WRX using a 06-07 TMIC?
Are you guys even mounting them or just hooking up the hoses and calling it good?

Re: Intercooler Mounting
I think a lot of people are not using the brackets. Simply since you would have to fab your own brackets.

Re: Intercooler Mounting
Really? Even if you're using DOHC heads and intake? Mine came with brackets but I think they only fit the EJ20G intercooler which doesn't fit under my hood. I would think you could probably buy some brackets off a WRX that should fit.

Re: Intercooler Mounting
yea, I just make sure the throttle body hose clamps are safely tight, if all the hoses are tight, and the hood is closed, its not going anywhere. It would be nice to have it clamped down just for peace of mind, but its nothing Im too worried about.

Re: Intercooler Mounting
I've been running for the better part of a year with nothing holding up my TMIC besides the hoses. No problems whatsoever, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Re: Intercooler Mounting
I'm gonna play the geek's advocate here.
Yes lots of stuff works. That is a given.
Optimal is a situation that hold the IC in place, yet allows for expansion room. Rubber feet are great. Yet, TMICs are tough to implement that. Take it as you see fit....

Re: Intercooler Mounting
If you use a tight fitting hose and T-bolt it to the throttle body it is perfectly fine. Not only that but you have the y-pipe underneath giving it support as well. Our engines move around a lot with torque and bumps, the intercooler should move with it rather then stressing the hose connection or the IC body itself.

Re: Intercooler Mounting
You really need something to support the back side or the sides of the intercooler. That's why the stock setups have the extensions that come up from the transmission. Then everything moves as one piece, engine, trans, intercooler...

Re: Intercooler Mounting
That i see working,i was assuming the thought people might have was making brackets that attach to the firewall or something. That's why the stock setups have the extensions that come up from the transmission.

Re: Intercooler Mounting
No I would never attach it to the firewall lol. I put up a wanted ad on NASIOC but those guys want too much money for them.

Re: Intercooler Mounting
I would suggest trying the stock airbox brakcets from a 2.5 na engine like a forester or impreza. you can attach it to the pitch mount area and its already the correct shape etc..

Is that good or bad?kleinkid wrote:That is a sinful suggestion.
To expand on the topic; How do those of you running AWICs mount them? I would think that the extra weight of the water would put more stress on the TB coupler, if that is all that is supporting it.

Re: Intercooler Mounting
I made a bracket to support the AWIC core. You've got to have something back there to support it. The TB won't do it.
Here's some pictures of the braket I made. I need to move it down slightly because the radiator cap hits the hood.
