What size intercooler????

Post by Naked Buell »

So I have a 85 Brat that has a 2.2T dropped in. I upgraded the turbo to a TD04 and have an intercooler but the intercooler is for a 2.5 and is WAY too big to clear the hood.
Do you know if the 2.0T intercooler is smaller or another one that would work better?
Any info on what you used or seen used would help.
Thanks

Which 2.5 intercooler are you using? Many people on here use the "skinny and wide" 06-07 WRX IC. Another option may be the old school "slanty" intercooler found on Ver 1-2 WRX & STI's. It is really tiny. ;)

Before the 06-07 WRX TMIC became common, people would ghetto-rig up old SAAB ic's in there, using a combo of hoses from other junkyard cars including volvo charge pipes & etc.

The slanty's were on 92-96 WRX's. Check eBay, NASIOC, and RS25.com for them, their's usually one or more floating around for cheap.

eBay UK has a ton, but the shipping is killer...

If the "2.5" is too big to close the hood I don't think any of the other intercoolers are going to fit. Are you saying it's too tall laying down in the stock position? They're all about the same thickness so maybe you need a front mount or AWIC with custom intercooler.

I don't even bgine to understand how this won't fit. I had an ej22e mocked up in my rusted out 86 brat 5-6 years ago with a td04 and wrx intercooler under the hood. Fit perfect with no mods to brat or engine.

Didn't they have a spare tire under the hood?

Could you add spacers to the hood hinges? I did this on mine and it worked fine. It also gave the hood a 'raked' look which some people like as well.
