(Save) (WA): 1974 Datsun 260z

Post by originalcyn »

This is a feeler on this, and if any one is on z forums or nissan forums, please feel free to repost this.

Image

Ok, she's a 1974 datsun 260z. Apparently there is only one production year of 260z in the US.

I'm not sure on the mileage. Here's what i know is wrong:

I know that one of the rails is a little rusted out and could stand to be replaced, it's not a big deal, i would probably only replace it if i was doing full restoration. the cam has a flat lobe. again, this is not a major issue, it could run better, but it's not going to stop you from driving. I think one of the transmission mounts is cracked, according to the z specialist guy near my house in clearview, this isn't an issue unless i totally botch backing up a hill at some ridiculous speed. rear hatch leaks, but i have already purchased new gaskets for it. around the doors also need gasket replacement. Various electrical issues, ie the heater and rear defrost are weird.

last time i tried to start, she started fine. That was about a year ago. I'll pull the tarp off soon and start her up again.

I bought her for 2500 and proceeded to put about 1000 dollars of work into her. So I'd LIKE 3500, but i realize that that is probably not going to happen. Probably 2500 at BEST. Make me an offer. SERIOUSLY, make me an offer! If it's someone on the forums I'm much more likely to give a discount.

I'll post more pictures later.

***EDIT 08.22.12***

Pictures as promised. Plus some explaination.

Exterior

Paint is in pretty decent shape, but that being said it is not even remotely original obviously.
Hood is a fiberglass hood. Doesn't seem to be able to be painted well. Plus it's not designed well, so once it is painted, the flex on the hood will cause paint to crack, as shown.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Body kit was molded into the body, No room for flex has caused cracks over time when it connects
Image

Rust around entry hatches. All of the seals for the doors and hatch are shot. A complete new set of seals for the rear hatch is included.
Image

Interior

I might keep this steering wheel.
Image

Dash is cracked pretty badly. Apparently that's a normal thing for these cars. There are several aftermarket options to fix this, including a dash cap.
Image

Not sure how many miles she has.
Image

Image

She could stand some new carpet. Something black would be fantastic.
Image

Seats were custom upholstery by the previous owner. They're actually done VERY nicely.
Image

Image

There are 5 of those snowflake rims. They're supposedly hard to find. One of them is a graphite gray color, which looks really nice.
Image

Here's the VIN.
Image

10.08.12 Update

Some pictures of the engine bay. I'm apparently really jittery, as half of these are massively blurry.

This makes me wish I wasn't up to my elbows in Merkur projects. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Z cars.

Haha, yeah thanks. I know what you mean. I absolutely love her, but i have no time, no spare cash, and no facility to store her. At this point i'm worried that she's being treated poorly, so i want her to go to someone who can take care of her properly.

These are bulletproof drivetrains as long as the carbs have been swapped out and some of the Lucas stuff fixed (I had other earlier small bumper 260 and it had Lucas Electrical stuff. My 240Z was Hitachi. Don't know what happened there.). Decently fun to drive and getting rarer. The 240's have gone up, so it's only a matter of time with the 260's, so now's the time to buy in. It sucks that if these were built in Europe, they'd be worth 5 times more (and be a third as reliable and that's comparing a stock 260Z with its original carbs). GLWS.

Re: FS (WA): 1974 Datsun 260z MAKE ME AN OFFER

Post by evolutionmovement »

I guess it's still tough selling these. The buyers are out there, but they're tough to find. Bought my 62k original mile, 1 owner 260Z in great original shape with almost no rust (I don't know if there was such a thing as NO rust unless it was fully restored) & even working A/C in 1994 for $1600 thinking I'd drive it and make a little money off it. Drove around with a sign looking for $2200 and everybody told me how it was a great car and I'd have no trouble selling it. Well, the damn Lucas electrical, shit OEM carbs with rotted vacuum lines, and no money trying to go to school meant the car sat more than it drove and I ended up happy just to get rid of it for . . . well, let's say I definitely didn't make any money on it. I was hoping times had changed or that it was because mine was avocado green. The problem is that this board isn't really populated by people who are flush with cash. What about ebay? Almost everything seems to be overpriced on there (of course, I don't know if they actually sell).

Haha, yeah i know what you mean. I feel bad watching her sit there. I don't think i'll make any money back, i'll probably lose at least a 3rd if not half of what i spent. I'm trying to avoid doing things like craigslist and ebay for the time being because i really want her to go to someone who will take care of her, various forum members and what not.

Yeah, we don't have a ton of money here, but i think we all appreciate value and quality.

Bump on this. Sophie needs to go by the end of summer. IF anyone knows anyone trying to get a 260z i'd be thrilled to entertain reasonable offers.

I'm going to start posting her up on Nissan forums as well. Does anyone a part of a decent nissan forum?

I registered at:

zcar.com
northwestnissans.com
hybridz.org
zilvia.net
zdriver.com

Ultimately i want to her to go to someone who is going to take care of her. I don't have time or the energy to become a part of those forums. It would be nice if i could focus on forums that had the same sort of community as legacy central does.

Thank you for the advice! I'm trying to decided what to do. I'm going to pull the steering wheel and i think i'm going to try to sell the snowflakes separately. I saw someone on craigslist list a set of 4 for 600. I know that's unrealistic, but i think that if i just "include" them with sophie, it won't increase the price any. If i had them mounted i think i'd have to get all new tires as well, which kind of makes me end up spending more than i want to. The snowflakes are 15 i think and the steelies are 14.

This car is begging for a turbo'd 5.3 chev. It makes me wish I didn't have so many other projects on dwindling back-burners.

Snowflakes are 15's if i was you, and i wanted to make some money, i would......

Mount "new" tires on the snowflakes
re seal the valve cover
put SU's on
power wash engine
and get an oem wheel if you can find one.

Selling the snowflakes on the side with no tires i would not expect any more then 200 and thats high if you ask me. Everyone and their mom wants swasticas so thats my 2 cents.

The most annoying thing is the first i did was the valve cover seal. i got the nissan one, had it professionally done and all that and it still seems to leak.

What do different sus run cost wise?
