No muffler = Fix it ticket = Need a muffler

Okay. So I have been running the idea of putting a muffler on but haven't found "the one". Today, a friendly State Trooper put my searching into high gear. A member on here had recommended an STI muffler but they seem to be hard to come across. I have a limited budget and am looking for suggestions. Tone, performance and fitment are my biggest concerns (Are there others I should know about?). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you wanting something temporary to get the ticket dismissed or are you wanting to find that "perfect" exhaust?

If I were you I would go to the junkyard and get a stock muffler, clamp it on with some cheap auto parts store hardware and get your ticket fixed. Then upgrade your exhaust. They might not approve of a muffler that isn't stock. And pretty much anything newer does not look stock.

In my state it's illegal to modify your exhaust to be louder than stock.

Thanks for the replies!

This is what I have on right now:
Invidia 3" bellmouth dp, 3" high flow cat, into a 2.5" pipe out the back

I don't need to go through an inspection at all in my state. It was purely just a noise advisory. Which means that it was a slow morning for this trooper. I have to have a permanent solution because I run the gauntlet everyday.

I have no problem running a stock muffler if it will compliment my set-up. Also, if it makes a difference, this July I plan on a TD04 and TMIC upgrade.

All in all looking to keep the rumble and the flow while keeping the noise down.

Then I reccommend the sti muffler as your best option for a reasonable price. Just scour craigslist, junkyards and nasioc.

The sti muffler actually sounds pretty good.

Great to hear! I might have actually found one. Hoping to hear back from the dude. Do you happen to know if the inlet pipe from the flange is 2.5" on the sti muffler?

No idea. I'm guessing its 2.25" but I've never had one before. Only heard them on legacys and stis.

I was under the impression that the sti exhaust was 2.5 all the way through.

Awesome! You are right o-cyn. I just found a thread confirming it goes axle back at 2.5". Thanks for the help guys!

Yeah, no worries. Too bad you're not closer, i have a forester xt axle back sitting around doing nothing that i'm trying to get rid of. Though, no idea if it fits or not. If the sti axle back fits though, so should the forester one, though it is probably about an inch longer.

Not too much out here for parts laying around. Nothing in the junkyards for first gens either. There is an old lady driving around locally in a white SS though. Doubt she has an sti muffler for me. It seems like the west coast is the place to be for accessible parts! Especially in your neck of the woods. I think I found an sti muffler in state so hopefully it works out.

I'm glad you found one over there. Yeah, sti cat backs are pretty much everywhere over here. To the point that my forester xt muffler is pretty much scrap to everyone.

Not a bad problem to have!

The exhaust is officially mine and am picking it up next Saturday.

With this muffler I want to cut off and hook up to the existing pipe. Is there a flange out there for this that is less than $40? I can only find the 3" to 2.5" dp adapter flange online.

Found a good muffler shop and got the muffler on today. It is an '04 sti muffler and it is real quiet. I just heard the BPV working for the first time. I miss the rumble already. It's like my car got punched in the nuts but instead of a high pitched voice it is just quiet. I can't tell you how happy my wife is though!

I have had officers make an issue with my mufflers in the past. I kindly remind them that its no louder than a Harley and they shut their mouths very quickly. Its worked so far!

That is a great point! I had thought of that after the fact. Unfortunately a lot of these guys don't have a sense of humor. At all... Nice moustaches though!

The worst part is that my exhaust was a great OBD reader as I am sure it is for everyone. Could tell a lot about the car by it's sound. Or lack of sound when it stalled. lol

Yeah they're not that kind hearted around here either which is irritating. I used to kiss their asses but as I've progressed in my age I've become less tolerant of their attitudes. I'm still polite but very to the point with their bs.
Yeah man! Same thing. I can always here when there's something funky going on by the exhaust.

If your car is newer than 25yrs old, that is. Well, that or if you've got anything with a V8. Cops love that shit.
