FYI: EJ22T w/ DOHC and Wiseco

Post by napphappy »

I finished building the engine and should have it running by the end of the week. I thought I would share some findings.
This may be common knowlwdge but....

The Wiseco pistons K601M975(Stock Replacement .020 over) have a 20cc dish,(7-8cc less than stock) making them perfect for the Phase I DOHC swap. With the Wiseco's and the DOHC it should be around 8.0 to 1 comp.
This is with the stock EJ22t head gasket.

Wiseco(and almost everyone else I talked to) does not recomend running less than .030in piston to head clearance. With the EJ22t head gasket you have about .042in clearance. With the "thin" EJ22 headgasket, you are left with about .015in clearance. Thats about half what Wiseco recomends.

and what is the piston side clearance to cylinder wall..?

also do you happen to know what the thickness of the oem headgasket is.. cause I've got cometic headgaskets that are .051 thick.. sooo i'm wondering what my clearance would be.

I ran .003 side clearance, since Im not running "high" boost. If you are going to be running higher HP levels you should run larger clearances.

The stock EJ22t HG is about .054in. So that Cometic should be fine.

Where did you get your machine work done on your EJ22t?
How much did it cost and are you happy with their work?

I used a local guy that I like alot. We talked alot about tolerances, bore finish, ect... And I was able to hang around when he bored the block. Which was nice, because I was able to see the final measurements, and they were right on. It cost me $20 a cylinder to have it bored.

Whoever you use, talk to them ALOT, before you decide to use them. Be sure they are willing to work with you.

I will be running about 15psi and 18psi max. Im guessing around 250-275CHP.

The pistons cost me 455 shipped. Not bad considering they come with rings, pins, and clips.

I think http://www.importperformanceparts.net/ is about the cheapest.

Nice to see this coming together. You are way ahead of me and my Ej22T build. But then I don't even have my SC installed yet...

That is sweet! We should set up a time once you get it running to check out each others Turbo Outbacks!

I finally got all the wiring chased out and have been driving it to work.

Sweet. I didn't realise the Wisecos had less dish. Now I'll more apt to get the phase I DOHC heads. You just made my day :-D

^Cool

UPDATE: Now Running :)
More Observations: At .003in piston clearance there is some slight piston slap(knocking noise) at start up. This was worriesome at first, becuase it sounds alot like a very slight rod knock. But the sound goes away in a few minutes, after the pistons warm up a bit.

More updates?

Glad to hear its running. I went with Wiseco's reccommended side clearance. I was expecting a little slap on startup, as I was told that's part of having forged pistons. I'm shure it'll still be a little disconcerting at first.
