Yeah I replaced all kinds of stuff, the maf, o2, changed and relocated the purge control solenoid,code:35 that is, also did the knock sensor and swapped in a GM 2 Bar map sensor. I cant even remember all of it but i believe that should be it. The codes finally stopped after the purge control solenoid.

When my '93 NA AT bc was running, it was getting 18-19 mpg mixed driving (rings were worn--143 psi compression readings with one cylinder at 101). My '93 ss AT was getting 24.5 - 25.5 mpg mixed driving. By comparison, my '98 AT bk is getting 22 - 24 mpg.

funny my 93 NA auto bc was getting the exact same mileage as you.

My 94 SS is hovering around 20mpg.

I think I need a alignment I am sure it is important. What kind of pressure are we running in our tires?

New Timing Belt and Tensioner and Cam Seals (Tensioner was causing knock from front of engine) and MPG is up almost 2mpg. Was averaging around 21.5-22mpg mixed. Last week fill up was 24.5mpg and looks to be about the same this week so far. Now after I can get my igniter or cam shaft sensor replaced and get rid of my no start issue, and soot on the back window issue, I should be getting more :)

Something is seriously wrong with my car.

i have exactly the same KM/MPG as you do.
I Still dont know what can cause this.
im not a pro mecanic either,

im trying to build a tmic vf11-td04 with my jmd injector 440cc with my new magnacor and coil pack.
and i also have the jecs maf , and 06 intercooler not installl yet , i got some nice headlight blacksunglass from WIDES
these make the car look soo sexy : )

So if anyone have some clues on where to start. the car was pulling hard stock, but like i have say on another post
i run the car on mbc and i lost the screw and i still using this. but the km mpg was the same as now i cannot say its worst i must be running 5psi

I like my car really, but it's drive me nuts..

My 1992 N/A 2.2 w/ 4eat gets around 24mpg during my short mixed commute. On highway, I achieve around 27.3mpg on average. :P I do not partake in enough city driving to give reliable statistics.

just to make you all cry a bit
I just got 31mpg on a 515mile trip to CT for Wicked Big Meet in the RS-RA
I used 1 bottle of octane booster with 94 from PetroCanada to start then 93 from Sunoco and topped off with 93 Mobile at a rest stop to have a mostly full tank to start the day.
most of the trip at about 65-70mph made at least 7-8 passes
the car is 90% stock only brakes/suspension and running a brand new jegs maf, used clean air filter

I've driven the hell out of my wagon the past few months. Last trip to Eastern Washington I averaged about 23/24mpg highway. Not terrible for a automatic turbo wagon and average speeds of 75/80mph.

NA 2.2 with CAI and opened up exhaust with UEL headers, stock ecu and engine management, I get 23-25 towing, which is a huge improvement over stock, in general mixed city highway driving it varies between 25ish if I am running it hard to about 30 if I am being very conservative. On a longish road trip I have gotten as high as 31.5 with 29-30 being the more repeatable result. so my mileage is all over the map. Oh and I am running 205/50-16 tires on 7x16" wheels. I know this is off topic, but that is the largest wheel tire combo that will fit my wagon in the rear, the front will take a stock 2009 WRX 17" 255/45-17 with no problem.

my driving style varies...if driving for economy, I will short shift at the lowest possible rpm that doesnt lug the engine at the lightest possible throttle. With my particular car, that's 2000 rpm first to second, 2200 second to third, 2500 third to fourth, and 2000 fourth to fifth.

If I am towing, I keep the revs up a bit from economy, but still use the highest gear I reasonably can that doesnt overload the engine for the task at hand.

If I am driving the car hard, average revs will be well above 2500 with very little time above 5000, this is the rev range where this little motor shines and it works well there at the expense of fuel of course. :) Of course under those conditions my right foot is flat on the floor most of the time. I expect fuel economy to suck under those conditions.

Thats really good, Wrxish! Is this awd or fwd? Auto or manual? If awd, that tire diameter is virtually identical to the stock 14s.

the car is awd Mike, and 5 speed manual. I have had a lot of fun fixing this car up, the next step with this puppy after I finish the shocks and springs is to change tranny and diff fluids with long life lube from amsoil and see if mileage goes up. Hoping for an improvement after changing those fluids out. I already run 0-w30 amsoil in the engine and find that the light weight oil helps during warm up. I would love to get another 192k out of this engine before rebuilding. I would love to be solidly in the over 30 mpg range all the time.

How? Running about 1/2 point lean of stoich in the 15.2-15.3:1 range when cruzing. I know the EPA doesn't like that, but my wallet sure does.
How do you make your engine run that much leaner?

Update to original posting. Car now has its 2nd 2.5 liter engine in it as the first one died due to rod bearing failure supposedly caused by insufficient oil pressure. I think I understand why that happened. The guy building the engine didnt take into count oil pump capacity when he set bearing clearances, or thats what I am guessing. That engine was surprisingly good on fuel and would get over 30 on the highway if I kept my speed down to 60-65. That works well here in VA since most roads have speed limits no higher than that. The engine that replaced that first 2.5 liter has a much stouter oil pump to hopefully deal with the bearing failure issue. While I only have about 1000 miles on it, it does not seem to want to return the kind of fuel economy I got from the previous engine. I have been lucky to get mid 20s at best in local driving. My local driving includes some highway driving automatically because of where I live. I am hoping it loosens up some as I pile on a few more thousand miles and the mileage improves approaching what I was getting from the previous engine. Especially considering the fact that fuel prices are on their way back up now. I am also hoping this engine stays together for the long haul. I am tired of changing engines.
