Catch Can Nastiness
I put on a catch can when I did my AWIC setup, and didn't expect much from it, but when I pulled everything apart, I must say it has worked.
I collected about 2oz worth of nasty oil sludge, and that was after I spilled about the same on the garage floor. I'm going to add a separator plate to try and separate the inlet and exit sides to help improve the oil separation.
I have been looking for some emissions (oil resistant) hoses locally, and haven't had much luck. I'll have to see what I can find online.
Here's some pictures of the nastiness.

Honestly. I would replace the pcv hoses. When I did my pcv hoses they were all basically plastic. The lower one connected to the block was definitely cracked because there was no more flex in the rubber and when you replace the pcv it is just enough to split it.

I was not prepared with the plastic piece so I had to repair it by melting it and put some high temp just incase. Definitely helped everything in general, mostly quieter I am sure it is doing good for the motor and seals.

You will need 1-4. You can get the clamps to if yours are not good condition, mine were fine. Also get the pcv valve and wrap the threads with a bit of teflon tape just incase, I guess it would help make a better seal.

My PCV system is far from stock, and I no longer have the F pipe. Surprisingly enough, the plastic F pipe was in good shape when I removed it. I am only using the stock PCV hose for the short runs on the plastic piece under the intake manifold. They're not super pliable, but they'll work. But good advise for others with the stock setup.
I've got inline filters on the lines coming from the valve covers to help the oil vapor form back into a liquid and drain back into the valve covers. Those seem to work pretty good.
For the back PCV vent I'm actually using the IAC valve hose to bring it out to where I can tie into it and bring it to the catch can. That's the hose I need to replace since it's just heater hose.

How much boost are you running?
I have the same catch can on my turbo ej22e with a clear hose going to my turbo inlet & it is still Perfectly clear after about a year of use.
Catch can is also empty.
? if the ej22t generates more crank-case pressure than the ej22e.
I run an EVO III TD05-16G Turbo (straight off a JDM EVO III Engine swap) on the ej22e OBS-t @ boost levels between 4.5 (spring of the tial 38mm EWG) to 10-11 PSI high boost level.
I'd expect to see some crap in the can if I was running higher levels of boost

If there is a hydraulic hose shop in your area they should have loose hose that is oil resistant - it will be expensive though as it is designed to be used on high pressure applications - 350+psi.
Another option would be oil or tranny cooler hose in the proper size.

There is a drain already. However based on the gooky stuff in there, I'd probably have to remove it to drain it.
I had only been running stock boost or so.
Tranny cooler hose is a good idea.
Thanks

It just looks like a fair amount of condensation in the oil, which could easily just be from lots of cold starts and/or short trips, among other things. I'd say the catch can is doing a pretty decent job.BXSS wrote:Strange, catch-can looks muck looks like something you'd expect @ higher boost levels.....

Agreed, I mostly drive in the city, and yes I was quite impressed with how good a job it was doing.SLODRIVE wrote:It just looks like a fair amount of condensation in the oil, which could easily just be from lots of cold starts and/or short trips, among other things. I'm having second thoughts about putting a diverter/baffle or something in there. I'm not sure if it would really make a difference.
You've got two main things happening, the gasses expanding, and the oil vapor dropping out. I don't know if that is the more important step vs. having the vapor impinge on another surface for it to condense.......
I don't know......thoughts. Should I leave the catch can alone, or add a diverter in?

I've talked it over with a buddy of mine....and it may be a trial and error type of thing.
I think what I'm going to do is use a piece of mesh instead of a solid piece of metal.

I was going to recommend mesh. Josh, got any pics of your setup? I've been trying to pin a source on the oil consumption in my 2.2L N/A. I know oil isn't getting sucked in above the TB as it's bone dry, however when I look inside the intake it's evident oil exists. To me that screams PCV valve. It's been recommended to me to add length and diameter to the PCV hose, to see if oil consumption (burns at 5.5K+ rpms at wot, which I barely go, but a quart dissappears every 1,000 miles ) will drop.
If you want josh, I can send you a few different meshes if you want to try them out (as long as you don't need huge pieces). I have very fine to very coarse "mesh" stainless steel.

Yeah I have some pictures from my turbo install. I've actually have two separate means to catch oil. I put foam in on the valve cover breathers to help condense any oil vapor, and those appear to be working pretty well. I don't have any or very little oil where it ties into the intake.
For the vent coming out of the block, I've got that running to a catch can, and then back into the intake. That's where all my oil is coming from.
If your car is a non-turbo, putting a catch can from the back vent on the block should be pretty straight forward. You could probably not do anything on the valve cover vents and be fine.
Here's some pictures of my setup.

Yeah if you don't mind sending me some mesh, that'd be great! I know a store near me has brass, but I'd prefer to either use SS or aluminum. I'll take some measurements this afternoon, and let you know.
Thanks!

Does anyone have a writeup on how to install an A/O separator on our cars? Or at the very least a good catch can. I was under the impression that a good A/O separator needed to be mounted above the point that the hose re-entered the intake tract to let gravity do its thing. But with our cars the hose re-enters at the top of the 90 degree inlet. I need to build one for my hybrid setup but am not sure where to start. This thread is especially making me want to get started on that project.

Here's pics of the mesh installed. When I first laid things out I got the top piece backwards, and had to retrim things. But it fits well, doesn't move around, and hopefully will provide a surface for oil vapor to collect on.
