EJ20K Valve Cover Gaskets - Inner

Post by skid542 »

Okay, I know I've asked about some of this before, but bear with me.

I went down to NAPA to get a set of valve cover gaskets for my 20k heads and asked for a set for a 98' 2.5. There were two different options. I got the first set and took them home. They fit the periphery perfect. The did not fit around the spark plug holes though.

So I got the second set. They did not fit around the periphery and they did not fit around the spark plug holes.

So, is there a set domestically that will fit around the spark plug holes? Has anyone actually confirmed this?

If not, who would be my best bet to get a full gasket set. I really don't want to do this half arsed and without these gaskets I'm pretty much stuck on what I can on the motor for right now.

Thank you for all the help in advance.

I'm not sure but I believe I got OEM gaskets for my 97 EJ20G (some say it's an EJ20K) that fit from a 96 legacy 2.5 DOHC. Had to specify that it was DOHC because there's a SOHC version that's different. It fit almost perfectly except there were a couple parts around the outside that were missing. Let me see if I can find a picture but I don't think it was a big deal and put them on anyways.

Here you can see where it's missing a few small pieces of the gasket. Some of them are there but some are not.

Don't forget to replace the gaskets for the bolts that hold the covers on. Those are usually what is leaking.

Kimo,

Those are excellent pictures!

However, that is not what my valve covers look like around the spark plug holes. It is what both sets of gaskets I've picked up look like though.

Mine are more square and have two little 'quarter circles ' at two of the corners. I'll see if I can get pictures.

Perhaps I don't actually have 20k heads? *scratches head*

Do they look like this? These are valve covers from a 06 STI.

Negative H4. Mine still have a more square hole for the spark plugs. They also have 'cooling' fins on the top near the plastic breather vent tube.

Matt,

Thank you. I found that thread late last night and only got a few pages into it.

And I was gathering I might not have the EJ20k heads as well. I'm now a little confused as to what I actually have. I'll double check when I get home but the covers I have do look a lot more like Kimo's last post than anything else.

Sounds like I may have some researching to do to figure out what I have. One of the big reasons I wanted the motor out of Kelly's car was for the 20k heads :-/.

Well, I played out in the garage for a bit and among other things - I confirmed my valve covers look just like what Kimo just posted.

So it appears I don't have 20k heads :(. I guess I need to spend some time figuring out the subtle differences so I can pin down just what I have.

As always, thanks for all the help guys. I'll exchange things at Napa for the 96' Legacy GT and see how that works.

It would be obvious if you did because you'd have coolant and oil lines or at least blocked off ports for them on your left head.I don't think ej20h heads were the only ones with those covers.

The 20H. If you have 20H heads they're twin turbo and have coolant and oil lines on both heads to feed and return from the turbos.
