OK, dumb question time

Post by IronMonkeyL255 »

What do you guys use to lube the front crank seal when you put it on?

This last time, i used chassis grease, and something seems to have gone wrong and there is now a 1/4" gap in the lip of the seal. I was gonna use dielectric grease because it's the only other kind of grease I have around at this juncture. Anyone have any better ideas?

This is a good question. I don't think I used any grease on them but I can't remember. If I did it was all purpose chevron grease. Same stuff I used on my axles and tons of other things like the fuel lines that didn't want to slide on(lubed up the hard line and slide the hose on, didn't put the grease in the hose).

Do you think that all purpose grease will do any harm on the hoses?

it shouldn't harm anything.

I'll see if that did the trick tomorrow after the RTV cures. If not, i am gonna try installing the seal with the pump still attached. Every time i have done it thus far i have had the pump off for one reason or another, so i installed it in the pump then installed the pump on the block.

I just put oil on my seal and hammered it on evenly. I would think grease would sludge up over time and clog ports in the middle of the seal that allow oil to lubricate it.

You should just use oil.

If you want something more than oil, use assembly lube. Do not use grease.

MacGyver of scooby repairs.

I used assembly lube. Everything seems to have gone together perfectly. I wasn't happy with the oil pump the rebuilder used, so i got one off an '06 STI to go on there. I had to trick the dealership into selling me the o-ring behind the oil pump. I went in and told them what i needed, and they said it would be 4 days, but when i went back with the part #, they said 'we got 3 of those in stock'.
