How to calibrate idle speed sensor ej20g

Post by gunnar »

I got a ej20g engine in my legacy turbo that the idle sensor has been disambled and cleaned.. Now i need to calibrate it since the idle speed is controlled by the ecu..
Any advise?

Unless you have a means to read the idle speed duty % via the ECU or with a meter, what I'd suggestion is getting the engine nice and warm, turn off all accessories and then adjust the head until the idle is correct. There should be a dead spot where adjusting the top does nothing. You want to try and position the top in this area so the ECU has adjustability on either side of the "center".

I have adjusted the top of the idle swich to go +- 800rpm, but the only thing is that its not that long "cold program" Now, it stays on 1100 rpm at first, but falls really quick down to 8-900 rpm.
Not a problem tho..

When you say you adjusted the idle switch, are you talking about the one in the TPS? Did you adjust it per the instructions in the FSM?

Ok, so you rotated the electronic top part of the IAC valve to get your idle around 800 rpm.

Can you elaborate on what specifically the problem you are now having?

I can put out a video.
When the engine is cold, kt is suppose to run on 1500 +- rpm in 20-30sec +-, but it starts at 1500, and in 2 sec it goes right down to 800rpm.

Ok, so if I understand you correctly when the engine is cold the idle revs up to 1,500 rpm for about 2 seconds and then drops down to 800 rpm instead of staying at 1,500 rpm for a little while longer. Is that an accurate description of the problem?

What is the ambient temperature when this occurs and does it occur when you've let the car sit overnight or for an extended period of time?

Could you take a picture of the electro magnet top of the IAC valve. I'd like to see the orientation of the top in relation to the valve body.

That is right, you understand my problem correctly
This problem comes when the car stays over night.
I can take a picture for you :)

What is the outside temperature normally when your problem occurs?

Are you using the ej22t or EJ20G ECU?

That's not really cold, but I have heard that others have experienced cold starting/idling issues with the EJ20G ECU.

The EJ20G thread has some info, and this post has the details.

You could try swapping the top portion from another IAC valve and see if that helps.

That is just how that ECU runs on startup. If you read the EJ20G ECU you will see that it is a common issue and nothing to worry about.

+1

EJ20G's have cold-start issues.

You can buy a new IAC (idle air control) like in your pic and it'll be 'calibrated' but may not do anything other lighten your wallet by $300+ USD (you don't state where you're from or list it in your Signature - based on your email I'm guessing Norway??). More than a few people have replaced the IAC w/out success.

But the one thing that's different about your issue is that it actually starts on the 1st try. What does the car do when you try to drive it without letting it 'warm up'? Does it die/bog/run rough?

Try this when the car is cold/sat overnight: Turn the key on for a split second - but don't let it start. If it does start, turn it off immediately. Then restart it and see if the idle is any better.

90% of the time w/my EJ20G ECU, I have to start, stop, start and then it'll run properly. If I hold the key 'til it starts and let it run, it runs rough for about 2-3 seconds then it smooths out and runs normally. Also, if I let it warm up, the idle will go up and down about 2-300 RPM 'til it reaches operating temp - it does NOT stall. I usually start it (after 2nd try), drive away and have no issues. Always starts fine once warm.

Just a note about the procedure Todd mentions of turning the key for a split second and then restarting. This likely adds additional fuel due to the start up enrichments.
