SO this means I can just put in STi rods onto my EJ22T crank no problem.....no worries about the thickness of the rods???

Wrong.

Unless it's a Phase 2 crank, the rod journals are 4mm difference in diameter from Phase 1 - Phase 2.

I am 99% sure you can. I am pretty sure I am using STI rods in a current ej22t build, but I did the build 5 months ago and don't rememember for sure. Doh!

I have compared and measured the rods side by side.

Phase I has the thrust bearing on the #3 (middle) journal, phase II has thrust on #5 (flywheel end).

The only Subaru crank/rods with the smaller 48mm rod journals is the phase I EJ25 N/A DOHC, all other motors and the 52mm.

All Subaru rods are the 5.137" length, except the phase I EJ25 DOHC with 5.181" rods and the phase II EJ25 N/A SHOC with 5.167" rods. All Subaru rods are the same width.

I currently have EJ22T, phI EJ25, phII EJ25, and Sti rods sitting on my bench side by side (I'll try and snap a pic when I get home). All have about the same beam size execpt the Sti which is bigger.

I stand corrected then ;) I was pretty certain that all Phase 1 were 48mm and Phase 2 were all 52mm. Funny how Subaru went through the various arrangements as they did.

do i need to open my running engine to know if its a phase 1 or 2 ist a legacy 90LS. and what about the piston pin diameter am i going to have problems with that on the sti rods. i wanted to use this combination(sti rods ej22t pistons) since my goal is 300 awhp. and i wanted sti rods since i know a person that got 600awhp out of a stock internals STI here in PR. and of course is the cheapest way of achieving this king of horsepower and you dont have to go the aftermarket way

Your '90 LS will be Phase I, the EJ25 went Ph II in '99, I'm not sure about the EJ20/22 but I know it was about the same.

All Subaru piston pins are the same diameter.

sorry for opening old post but im wondering if a sti crank (ej25) will fit the ej22t block? i was looking in swapping crank and pistons in the ej22t without having to bore it or mods..

Check out macipusy's build journal thread below. He speaks of using a phase 2 crank on page two.

Back from the dead!

Been looking....with the wrist pin difference, being tapered at the end. Does this cause a problem with forged ej22 pistons, on oem sti rods, on ej22 oem crank?

The pistons would need to have a custom compression height. The STI rods are a different length than EJ22 rods.

You'd have to call a piston manufacturer (JE, Wiseco, etc.) and give them your specs and get a proper set made. Overall, easier to use EJ22 rods which are already forged since the STI rods don't give you much additional strength. If you do want even more strength, for say around 400whp or more, then you can call up Eagle or somebody and get a set of forged EJ22 spec rods.

04-07 sti rods are the same 130.5mm length as the ej22. There is something different about the 08+ sti rods and pistons but I can't swear by what it is.

Oh dang, you're right. I got mixed up with the N/A EJ25 rod length. Thought that applied to the turbo EJ25 engines as well.
10 seconds of research proves you're right. ;)

Carry on.

So would they be fine with ej22t type aftermarket pistons?
