Surging problem...Stumped

Post by amph3355 »

I have a 93 wagon. It runs great...until it doesn't. After bout 20 miles of highway driving, it starts to surge. Tac goes up and down, no power. Usually occurs on uphill slopes. NO check engine light has ever appeared. Pull over and shut the car off, 5 minutes and all is well again. Here is what we have done so far:
Changed the Spark Plug wires (Subaru Service tech diagnosis)
New Fuel pump and filter
New alternator

Check engine light does appear at start up, so it is not burned out. any ideas are welcome and appreciated.

Welcome to the BBS.

Have you checked the ECU for stored codes? Instructions on how to read the codes is on my site.

I had something similar to your probably years ago where I would all of a sudden lose power while driving. Sometimes I could coax the car back into running right where other times it would die. Usually it would start back up, but on occasion I would have to leave it sit and then it restarted. The problem ended up being the MAF sensor. In your case you could try using MAF sensor cleaner to see if that helps or see about getting a replacement MAF sensor.
