93 turbo legacy wagon 20g hybrid build

Post by The.wee.baby.seamus »

Alright guy and gals I'm building my motor. I am getting version 2 sti 20g heads. I'm putting these heads on a 22t block. I am wondering what the best way to go about this would be. I cased my block and the crank looks perfect. While it's in the budget to replace the crank at$380 usd. While that is doable that money could be useful elsewhere I'm wondering if the crank even needs to be replaced. It doesn't have a spot or mark on it and looks almost brand new. The bottom end has 280,000 on it. Anybody know the mic specs for the crank. And also would like if you guys could share a link for what parts are needed for this type of build. Thanks in advance

Sorry the first post was vague. Wondering if I even need to replace the crank or not. It looks damn near perfect and if it doesn't need to be replace then why do it. Any information is helpful.

Crankpin diameter: 51.984-52.000mm
Crank journal diameter: 59.984-60.000mm
Thrust clearance: .030-.115mm, Limit .25mm
Oil Clearance #1, #5: .010-.030mm, Limit .040mm
Oil Clearance #2, #3, #4: .010-.030mm, Limit .035mm

If it measures out to spec, take it and get it polished, then make sure when you reassemble it to check oil clearance with PlastiGauge. No need to replace it if it's in spec.
If it does need replaced, it's the same crank as any other EJ22, so should be easy to find one that is in spec out of a used engine for cheaper than new cost.

I just bought a crank from rockauto.com that came with matched king bearings for around 240 if you do need a crank

Thank you. Crank came out great from the machine shop.

Did you spin a bearing?

No the thrust bearing got all chewed up and I ended up with some pretty bad crank walk. The retainer on my throw out bearing broke so I pulled the engine out to do a clutch job and while I had it out I decided to throw on some dohc heads and when I pulled the crank pulley off the whole crank moved a good quarter of an inch.

Ouch.
Honestly my bottom end was in almost perfect condition aside from having 280,000 miles on it. Almost felt bad casing. But it will be better longer now
