replaced the 2.5 quad cam in my '98 Outback a couple of weeks ago with a wrecking yard pullout that had just had heads, head gaskets, timing belt kit and water pump, etc, etc, .. The donor car was rolled over, in the accident.

Problem now is that when started cold it rattles for a second or two, wondering if someone might have cranked it with it hydrolocked adn wounded a rod bearing. I puled the pan off the 2.5 I pulled out, and know the #1 rod bearing is inaccessable, but can the other three be changed without splitting the case?

Rod knock on start up is common/expected on older 2.5Ls. Should get quite a few more years of life outta it. I've never heard of anyone just replacing just a bearing or two. Having rebuilt a couple EJs I've had to split a block by unbolting the rods before, but it would be super dicey putting it back together.

listening today, maybe a cam follower? the tap after it's up and running doesn't sound like a rod.. just going to drive it and see what it does
