Swapping a 2.5l for a 2.2l? In a 01 Subaru outback.

Post by thatsme87 »

I have a 2001 Subaru legacy outback 2.5l sohc and the engine was run out of oil and according to the mechanic it's totally ruined. I have heard that you can only swap a 01 into it of the same year either a outback it a sus not sure what that means. But them some one told me that i could likely put a 2.2l into it if i did not mind losing a little horse power. Id this possible and how much do i have to change in order to do this. Thank you for any input

It's the same story as your question about the 99 Impreza ej22. viewtopic.php?f=5&t=56449&p=450918#p450918

You need one of those specific phase-2 ej22's, and need to swap the crank and cam sprockets over, intake manifold and all sensors, from your ej25 sohc.

***OR**** If you'd like to keep an ej25 in there, than any phase 2 sohc ej25 (pre 2005) will work. Same story as above, swap cam & crank sprockets, sensors and intake manifold.

Consider this: your 1999 Impreza had a 142hp ej22 engine pulling a 2850 lbs car. Your 2001 Legacy has a 165hp ej25 pulling a 3500 lbs car. You would *definately* feel the difference if you threw an ej22 in there.

I just went the other direction over the Christmas break, I put an ej25 into my (originally ej22) Impreza Outback Sport. It feels damn near quick.

Do you have to run racing oil in your rear end now.

Thank you for the info. I am just curious why you need to swap over the cam and crank pulleys and they're sensors on the 2.5l if it is a phase 2.

Cam and crank sprockets have different timing marks depending on the year and/or transmission. It's possible you'll source one with identical marks. But safest bet is to swap, or at least compare.

Same thing with intake manifold and sensors, it's very possible you'll have the same stuff, or you might have one with the same plugs but different pin assignments.

A good example is the 2004 only ej259 engine. That one is a huge mashup of early and late electronics and tech, yet the long block is compatible with your intake/sensors/sprockets.

Oh wow i had no idea. I thought since i have to change the cylinder heads and block that it was not going to matter and that it would be just a straight across engine change. Is there only one timing belt for the 2.5 sohc?

I don't know about only one timing belt, i'd just order the one thats right for your original engine, since you're swapping over the sprockets.

They added variable valve timing in 2005 for legacy and late 05 / early 06 for Impreza and Forester, so there may be new belt to match the variable valve timing specific sprockets. Those heads wont work for your car anyways.

Oh cool i will see what it takes for a belt great info thank you. I guess i am still trying to wrap my mind around keeping the same block and cylinder heads on the new engine but changing out the cam shaft and crank pulley. If i am understand it right it's due to how the sensors read? Because i am wondering how this effects timing on the engine with valve to piston clearance. I do see on the post you sent me earlier that the transmission and engine match up could cause different timing marks.

I didn't explain myself clearly enough, and I apologize that's causing you a headache. I'll try again.

Engine A = the engine currently in your 2001 Outback
Engine B = the sohc ej25 you purchase from any USA model 99-04 Subaru. From any transmission style. Forester, Impreza, Legacy (2000-2004 only, since the Legacy still used the old DOHC ej25 in 1999).

Pull Engine A from the car, and remove it's intake manifold, sensors, and crank and cam sprockets.

Install those parts onto engine B.

Install a timing belt meant for engine A onto engine B.

Reuse engine A's alternator, power steering and AC compressor.

Install engine B into your Outback.

Enjoy your outback!

By doing those steps exactly, you avoid any conflicts with any wiring, sensors, or timing. Subaru basically made the same engine from 1999-2004, the only changes that affect anything were the parts you'll be reusing from engine A.
