Unfortunately the coolant temp sensor didn't work. It's possible the one I pulled is faulty, it has been sitting for a very long time. I'll check it with a multimeter today.

There are technically two speed sensors, but only VSS 2 which is in the dash is used by the ECU for its controlling of things.

Where are you located? You should be able to use an auto trans cable as well. I didn't switch cables when I did my 5spd swap. Definitely try and get that fixed, clear the codes and see if anything changes.

Fixing the speedo did the trick! Woohoo! My car is a ton of fun now, especially with the sti shifter. Thanks guys.

Glad to hear that was the cause! Based on my own experience I had some weird things happen when my speedo wasn't working.
