The Torque Output of an EJ22T?

Post by LegacyT »

How is it that our stock EJ22T powered Legacys put out 181 ft/lbs of torque? 20ft/lbs of torque more than HP. This is very unusual for an engine? Is it the turbo? :P Also at what RPM is the torque at 181ft/lbs.

Thanks,
Mark

The motor has more displacement then say the WRX.....so the amount of torque is going to be more......which is why this motor is such a good platform for monster motors.....:D

Turbo engines nearly always have more torque than HP.

That 181lb/ft is at 2,800rpm.

But how is it that the peak of the torque curve is at 2800 RPM where the turbo is just starting to spool up?:?

Thanks,

Because our turbo's are very small, and they designed the turbo to spool quickly for good low end power.

EDIT: hey morgie, my mistake, it is not 2800 rpm. mine is at stock boost level (8.7psi) and a k&n filter w/ snorkus removed. mine is spooled by about 3300. :o

at 2800rpm i can tell you that my turbo is not pushing verry hard, at about 3-4psi .. 8-9-10 psi is reached at about 3300-3500rpm ! :\

Turbos almost always have big torque. That just keeps on going, flat enough to build a house on. You might not get full boost untill 3000 rpm but even at 0 psi (no vac) the engine doesn't have to suck air. That makes a big difference. Turbos also don't need to run a big cam. You get a mild cam that makes good torque down low and make up for it going flat on top end with boost.
