I have been doing some research on how to install a 04 STi steering rack in my swapped 01 RS. I will be using the turbo legacy cross member for my swap so I wanted to see if anybody has ever attempted this.
I know the 04 STi steering rack will bolt up directly to the RS with only a custom spline joint. So if anybody has installed an Impreza RS steering rack into their Legacy, this would lead me to believe that the STi one will fit as well.
Anybody ever think about this? The search didn't bring up much on this topic.

Re: '04 STi steering rack on Turbo Legacy cross member
I believe that the spline count is different between the racks. I would think a custom part is needed that would interface between the GC column and 04 STi rack...a hybrid of sorts.

Re: '04 STi steering rack on Turbo Legacy cross member
As far as I know the rack will fit, you'll just need the coupler between the splines changed. L&E Fabrications makes one. It basically is a combination of a GC end and a GD end so that it fits the different spline counts between your steering wheel and the newer rack.
The 05 rack has a hard mount on the rack on the driver's side of the rack vs the 04 (and our stock racks) have a bracket that fits over the rack to hold it in place. From what I've been able to read, the 05+ racks also have a bracket that attaches to the hardmount on the rack and has additional holes that allows you to bolt to the cross member or something like that. Our stock bracket bolts won't work, but if you get longer bolts for the newer racks, it should bolt right up into our cars on our stock cross members. It has been done at least.
Pertaining to your question, though, I would think everything should be fine, you'd just need that coupler modified or buy one that has already been modified.
