Stuck front axles

Post by silver03 »

99 forester. I think they are the originals with 167k on them. A no go with heat, air hammer, penetrating oil and lastly a hub puller. Ideas, other than replace hubs too? Thanks

I deal with this all the time at work, usually a quality air hammer does the trick but we have had to use a press before with success.

Also, what I typically do if the air hammer doesn't work while the knuckle is still bolted to the car, remove the roll pin from the trans side of the axle, remove the knuckle and axle together. Then rest the knuckle on a sturdy vise with the axle facing towards the ground, and use your body weight to push down on the air hammer to try and get it out. Use plenty of pen oil, I like PB blaster, being vertical on the vise helps the pen oil get into the splines of the hub for better saturation.
