WRX Whiteline rear sway bar

Post by Baddog »

Is anyone running a WRX rear sway bar on the stock rear suspension (trailing arm, lateral links). My understanding is that you need to notch the spare tire "bump". I am just looking for conformation before I order a whiteline rear sway.

Yes, that is my understanding as well. The Impreza bar has clearance issues on the spare tire bump.

I have an OEM STI sway bar on my car, and yes you need to get rid of the bump. I used an angle grinder...and while its not pretty it works. Also, when you cut into the bump you won't be cutting a hole into your trunk, its a hollow space.

Does anyone know what that damned bump is for anyway?

I didn't get pictures. It does work. However it's a serious PITA in my opinion. The bushings that come with the bar have to have the lip trimmed off of them to fit the older sway bar bracket mounts.

If I ever had to do this again I would just buy a bar made for the Legacy. Even though Whiteline only makes a 22mm.

I not only had to cut the "bump" out of the spare tire well I had to hammer some of it in.

The bar for the 02-03 (BSR33) comes with the right bushings. 04-07 (BSR36) is a different design. I find the 22mm adjustable rear is plenty of bar for street/fun driving on decent tires. If I was doing track days or a lot of auto-x I might think about cutting things up to make a 24mm bar fit.

:D But just think of the feeling you get afterwards knowing you've made something work that was never supposed to work in the first place.
