RHD Steering rack

Post by Chrisg03 »

SO im having some issues with my steering rack it has a bit of play in it and its a bit scary at times car wants to steer itself i feel a sort of "sway" on some uneven roads. I don't really feel like doing a rebuild due to fear of messing something up and being car-less again. Does anyone have any idea as to what i can replace it with? i am under the impression that the newer RHD racks available on eBay don't exactly fit our first gen Legacy's sub frame.. help please

Can you describe your problem a little more.

What size tires are you running and is the suspension stock or modified? Does the problem occur under certain road conditions or completely random?

Okay i should have been more clear the Wagon is lowered 2" with springs and i am running 225/45/17 and yes they do rub but only going up driveways
That being said i do notice it only happens on a few certain roads im not sure if it is due to asphalt deformation but it feels way too loose ..if i hold the steering wheel in place the car will still sway side to side as if i was playing with the steering wheel and at time ill move the steering wheel counterclockwise and i can still feel the tires moving to the right it really confuses me because it does not always happen only on said particular patches of roads

The first thing I would suggest checking is the steering rack bushings. If they are worn or completely shot that will cause the play.

Here are some pics of the rack and bushings out of the car.

Lowered 2".... do you have larger camber bolts to compensate and keep the alignment correct?

17" rims, but how wide?

How do the sway bar bushings and links look?

With KOEO, rock the steering wheel back and forth, about 20 degrees off center (both directions). Any clunking, binding or popping?

So i did the bushings and both outer tie rods and it feels a bit better but it still feels loose to me...
i believe they are 7in wide they are off a 2010 wrx
It also seems one of the sway bar links came apart
and no i did not get larger cmaber bolts i didnt believe i needed them since pepboys was allegedly able to align it just fine last time i got an alignment that might be my problem
