Well ths is interesting:

"I did just this by purchasing a used Subaru 3.70 LSD unit and a used legacy 4.11 open R-160 differential and creating a 4.11 LSD unit from the parts. I paid a rear-end shop $120 to drill the six 10mm holes out to 11mm so the LSD unit's bolts could be used, and to set up the newly assembled unit with the correct tolerances."

So it is possible to convert a non-LSD to LSD.
I may have to try this.

It probably has the pretty 'standard' gearing with 5th being .738. Being an outback though, it might have a 4.11 or even 4.44 FD to make better use of the torque. That is just a semi-edumacated guess though.

I would think that the 98' Outback has the 4.11 gearing, my 96' does.

I looked on all the lists and didn't find the ratio for my legacy. I am pulling a 5MT tranny from a 96 legacy wagon brighton edition for my 90 legacy ls wagon. I looked at the rear of the 96 differential and no sticker so does anybody know what the differential ratio is for a 1996 legacy wagon brighton edition?

Thanks

Look on the rear diff, on the casting part. There should be some sort of sticker on there with a code. Post that code, and I should be able to tell you what the final drive is.

Whats the casting part? Bottom, right side, left side. I'll even take a picture of the rear differential and post it.
