1st: 3.166
2nd: 1.882
3rd: 1.296
4th: 0.972

Hey JOsh I was just doing some work to the mid late 90's Legacys with the 2.2 Na, for the 5mt's the final drives are 3.9, where the 2.5 were 4.11. I have had a few this week from 94-99 and the FSM was consistant to the above gears over that spread of years. Just thought I's add that...

These are ALL 5-SPEEDs.
90-94 Legacy 5spd: 4.111FD
95-99 Legacy 2.2L; excluding 2.5L: 3.900
96-99 Legacy 2.5GT/Outback 2.5L: 4.111
93-95 Impreza 1.8L: 4.111FD
96-01 Impreza 2.2L: 3.900
98-01 Impreza 2.5L: 4.111
02-03 Impreza 2.5RS: 4.111
04+ Impreza 2.5RS SPORT: 4.111
02+ Impreza 2.5TS/OBS: 3.900
04+ Impreza 2.5RS(non-sport): 3.900

91-94 turbo legacys have a 3.9FD

FD on a 1990-94 5MT fwd is 3.70. Turbo 5MTs are 3.90.

Anybody have information on the actual ratio's, like what Psychoreo posted a little while ago. I am interested to know each individual gear ratio. For a few Subaru gearboxes.

Any links or help would be greatly appreciated.

i have an auto 93..does anyone know what the ratio is because i want to find a 5 speed for it but i dont know what tranny to put in it..help please

You should be 4.11 I believe. Someone will pipe in and correct me if I'm wrong but I know that the 5sp AWD NA's are 4.11 and I'm very positive you are too.

On the back cover of the rear diff, likely under some road grime, is a ~1"x2" sticker that will verify that for you. Just wipe off the back and take a look.

I believe this thread is missing the most important information of all, a differential code translation matrix.

Often you get a differential and you can't be sure what vehicle it came from. Even then you never know if it was swapped at some time. Even with the older style units the foil sticker is sometimes missing and you are left to guess. I searched high and low for this info and so far i haven't found it. Instead I went out and manually measured a bunch of differentials myself.

Code - axle type - LSD? - size - ratio
HB - female axles - open - R160 - 3.9
BK - male axles - LSD - r160 - 4.11
EF - male axles - LSD - r160 - 3.54
TR - male axles - open - r160 - 4.11


From what I can tell all differentials at least from the first generation legacys have this code painted on them in multiple spots.

Can we modify the first post to start to include these codes?

BTW, if anyone cares my frankendiff has been working for many years without issue. I took a 4.44 LSD and a 4.11 open differential and put the VLSD carrier into the 4.11 case.

I made a mistake on the last post (a very fuking time consuming mistake). The TR is actually an open differential.

i dont see the ratio for a 95 legacy awd auto...

OK, according to this (pdf) the 1995 Legacy AT has a 4.111 FD, while the MT has 3.900 FD... Exact opposite of the first gens.

This one has a ton of gear ratios. Doesn't do automatics though.

i need a compatible replacement tranny for my 91 legacy l, given that the rear end is a 4.11 what transmissions are compatible?

All the 4.11 transmissions will work, until they got rid of the speedo gear in the transmission itself. So anything prior to 05 for legacys, and prior to 08 for impreza. If you are intending to keep the cable actuated clutch, then stick with 90s 4.11s for ease of swapping.

The newer "phase 2" transmissions that appeared in the late 90s/early 2000s have twice as many bolt holes as the older stuff, but they still mount and bolt up just fine. That's what I'm using on my 92 Legacy, a 99 Impreza 8-bolt transmission.

I have a mt5 1993 legacy ss with a stock 3.90fd open diff. Can I swap in a 3.90fd 91/92 legacy ss vlsd using the rear axles already on my car?

If not, how hard is it to find the correct rear axle stubs? or is it possible to open up the axle housing and put the vlsd differential case into my open diff housing?

1. Only 91ss got vlsd, and 2. You need to get that Diff with the Stubs attached. Without the "unique to 91 VLSD diff only" stubs which are long out of production, the diff is useless. 3. Standard 90-94 legacy axles work.

94gt is 4.111 correct?
