Josh--No bad noise. Different sound than the 5 speed. Some sounds I attribute to the lightweight flywheel. About 500 mi. since the swap.

BTW, brand new '07 6mt's can be had from the dealer for about $3800 right now. For some reason Subaru is selling them cheap.
That is not a bad price for a NEW 6spd.

Is that a shop price or a regular customer price?

Hmmm. Does that seem weird to anyone else that he wasn't hearing any bad noises? Like shouldn't the back wheels be 'skipping' every once in awhile if you have the wrong rear diff?

no..... the only way the back wheels would "skip" would be if it had a welded center diff and it was trying to turn the front and rear wheels at different speeds. its probably putting alot of wear on the center diff/transfer gears (kind of like a not as damaging version of towing an awd car with the back wheels on the ground)

Customer price of $3900-3700, depending on how well you know the parts guy. That includes the slave. For some reason they are selling them cheap. I don't know if its still going on, you'd have to call the dealer. Maybe they realised there is a hot market for the 6 speed. Who knew?

The extras to do swap aren't that bad. There's tons of Legacy auto driveshafts to be had in junkyards. The linakge can be cheap or expensive dpending on how quickly you need it. I have a set...

If you have a SS, you already have a 3.90. Stubs, $100. Stock clutch, $???. I have a set at mid life.

OK, I'm gathering parts to get a different rear diff in. Got an '02 WRX rear diff(3.545), and axles, side seals on order. Going to do the rear wheel bearings and seals at the same time. Also orderd a Whiteline subframe bushing kit and the lockdown bolts. I'll start work on it week after next.

asc_up--I'm guessing that the DCCDPro dccd auto controller was working real hard trying to figure out what was going on, and hopefully may have prevented any damage to the tranny.

Since the auto controller only references TPS and the two axis G-sensor, it was probably just doing its thing.

Hypothetically, if you were at 3000 rpm at 70 mph in 6th gear with a 3.90 rear differential, what would the rpm be at 70 mph with a 3.545 rear differential?

2727 rpm. The maths: 3.545/3.9 = .909 (or 3.545 = 90.9% of the rpm with the 3.900). .909*3000rpm = 2726.922

I purchased an '02 WRX rear diff. 3.545 ratio, and the two axles. Put new side seals in the WRX diff, Whiteline rear differential support bushings, part number KSB 751, new bearings and seals in the hubs, new parking brake shoes, and had the rotors turned. Took the rear diffs to Pacific Import Auto and they swapped the companion flanges. The car feels better and shifts smoother. I wonder if I need to have the alignment checked after having the rear end apart line that?

Depends on what you took apart on the rear. I like to take out the big nasty lateral link bolt on the knuckle so I don't have to get an alignment.

I removed the knuckle/hub completely to put new seals and bearings in. Going to get the alignment checked.

Can I ask a simple question? Will Legacy 5mt stubs fit into the 6mt assuming you get the matching seals? According to Nasioc the 02-mid04 WRX 5mt stubs fit the 6mt.

Is this the correct breakdown of center reduction gears?
04-05 is 1:1, 3.9 ring and pinion in rear
06-07 is 1.1:1, 3.54 ring and pinion in rear

The part number for the stock axle stub in a 6mt is 38415AA110 plus Circlip 805329010 (times two of each)
The seals for a stub on a 6mt have part numbers
Left: 806730041
Right: 806730042

The center reduction ratios you listed are correct.

The stub shaft, seals, and circlip, part numbers you listed are what I used.

I tore my 5 speed apart to get the stubs only to find that they will not work. The 5mt stubs are held in by a snap ring and the groove for that is not large enough for the circlip that holds the stubs in the 6mt. If the newer one holds the circlip it should be fine.

Old 5mt on top, the ones I got for the 6mt on the bottom

Great info. So to make things clear I can use the old Legacy axles with the STI 6 speed stubs.

^ Correct. Thats what I did. STi axles and that crap are for the birds. Old axles are cheap to replace, so I'm fine with it.

Someday I may have to make hybrid rear axles for a R180, but I have to fry my VLSD first.

6mt
Matching rear end. 04-05: 3.90 , 06-07: 3.545
Auto driveshaft
6mt shifter linkage
6mt clutch & flywheel

I think '04's had the stubs already, or some of them maybe, but my '05 tranny did not.

Axle stubs - 38415AA110 and circlips 805329010

You would need matching seals, and I don't have a part # for those offhand.

You don't have to have a DCCD controller right away. It is interesting with no controller and an open rear diff though. I've got Spiider's controller now and it is worlds of difference.

I've had this crazy idea for a few years and wanted to do it and surprise everyone but my life is going crazy right now and decided not to hold back.

Unless i misunderstand the function,,, couldn't a single channel megasquirt be used to control the DCCD? Think about that for a second...

I suppose with the open-source nature of the megasquirt you could write some pretty badass code for it. I'd want to reference throttle, boost, speed, among others. The only thing that is nice to have is a 2 axis g-sensor like Spiider's unit does. Then it can make decisions based on what the car is doing.

John, you realize that the spot for the headlight leveler switch is taken now :-D

I missed this thread, but that 6spd in a BC is hot
