I use Extra-S, the stuff is really good:
I've used:
-Redline MT90/Lightweight Shockproof Mix
-Royal Purple Gear Max 75W90
-Valvaline Synpower
None of those were exactly very good, except the redline mix, but it's better to use the currently OEM stuff that subaru uses.

I used Redline MT90, it really smoothed out my Syncros a substantial amount.
I recommend it, although I still want to try out some other stuff too.

'94 White SS / 5MT - daily, absolute piece of a beater
'90 Red Sedan - EJ22T / 5mt Swap - drove it, SOLD it
'91 black SS / 5MT - (215/230k miles. eng/body)
[RIP - drove, hit, cracked a piston, swapped and stripped for swap again]

I use Redline LW Shockproof in two cars, the local auto-X guys got me started on it. I have not put more than 30,000mi on either one yet, but it made a trashed 5MT feel like new again.
I don't have a source for the Extra-S, but that stuff sounds good too.

Revival bump:
I'd like to see this thread continued with what is being used and how its performing. Especially with new oils being available and proven oils being discontinued.
I'm torn on what to fill my recently swapped 5mt with, considering Extra-S is still available on Amazon, but the local parts house has Amsoil severe gear on the shelf.

I scond Extra-S. It's great, my local shop happens to sell it by the QT too..
the guy who had the really low winestone SS on the corvette wheels
Re: what do you guys use
Extra-S, no question. It is excellent. I bought the 20L container a while back and use it in the trans and rear diff on all my Subarus.

I use Motul in the transmission, and the rear-end with the Subarus. I'm also running it in my Camry that has around 300k miles.

Re: what gear oil do you guys use
Thanks for the replies, gents.
I'd like to use Extra-S, but don't really want to pay shipping from the Amazon, and my local dealer (parts dept.(Hanson Subaru/KIA)) doesn't even know what it is. My local Cut Rate auto parts has the Amsoil sever gear. Anyone have any experience with it?

Re: what gear oil do you guys use
I've used the Severe Gear, its pretty decent. Also used Suby Certified Gear Oil (replaced Extra-S, new formula from new supplier, and was still sold as Extra-S many places last I checked). I can't say one is better than the other.

Hanson are the ones who ordered the 20L pail for me, but that's the smallest quantity they can do. Other than that you would be buying online, but it is worth it.

Re: what gear oil do you guys use
Im using amsoil severe gear with good results, 210,000 on the clock. I can still beat the synchros in second gear but the condition seems to be getting better.
