My 5 speed swap list. Here to confirm

Post by Baddog »

So I am about to do a 5 speed swap on my 96 Legacy.

This is what I currently have

96 4.11 Outback Trans (car has a 4.11 rear diff already as well)
Shifter Linkage
Trim piece around shifter
Clutch Cable
Exedy "Stage 1" Clutch
Flywheel
Crossmember + Mount
Pedal Assembly
Drive shaft
Starter

I am getting new shifter bushings (front and rear)
Also a short throw shifter.

From here on out I believe the rest is the wiring nightmare

Was possibly thinking of getting a MT ECU?

The axles are different as well I believe and maybe the cruise control module if you want that to work.

Was told the axles are the same. I will double check that.

I would want cruise eventually. Hadn't really done much research on that. Where is the module located?

EDIT: So upon a quick google search for people with BD/BG Legacys. They claim the part numbers are different between manual and automatic axles. However all of them that did a swap from Automatic to Manual said they used the automatic axles with no ill affects.

Maybe the axles are the same on the second gens, they're different on the first gens though. The module is usually up under the dash near the pedals or some are under the passenger side kick panel.

This may not even matter cuz my buddy says there is no difference between the auto and manual module but I can't say for sure.

I just finished an AT to MT swap in my '93TW and am running the AT front axles. I haven't noticed anything that would make me suspicious of a difference in the two.

I swapped in an MT cruise unit, and am running the ECU that came with the car, but not sure what differences there are in 1st and 2nd gen electronics. Yours may not need it.

I could use the factory ECU but read it would be easier to swap the ECU as it would save a few wiring things

As noted, the axles are the same between AT & MT.

The ECU's are the same as well for the 92 MY, just deal with the MT/AT identifier pin.

You'll need to pull out the TCU and the shift lock controller. To get the car to start, you'll need to jumper pins 11 & 12 of the B15 connector. All the details are in my swap write-up

I too just finished a 5spd swap
The cruise control only needs one wire on the relay changed when running the MT unit. It get power from fuse 23 and it goes to pin 2 on the relay plug.
Connecting the starter-interlock relay under the dash with the plugs like Josh did is by far the best way. I even used the holder from my mt parts car and attached it to the stock location beside the steering column.
I'm running a 98 jdm sti trans and the axles are the same I also have a 4.11 rear diff to match everything up

My only issue is with the shifter using part #35047AC030 and a GD shifter works but its tilted to the left but it works

Drill a hole in the side of the metal joint to stick the spring.

I didn't have ABS. I would guess you can try swapping in a MT ABS computer. I haven't looked at any of the diagrams to determine what would need to be done, but hopefully some other folks can chime in.

On first-generation Legacies, I don't believe the ABS system knows or cares that the transmission is swapped. I don't know what the deal is with your 96 model though.

On my 99 outback I kept the TCU. It is needed to run the ABS. With the ECU in manual mode it will ignore the TCU.

I left the 2 outter connectors plugged in for my TCU and got the ABS light to go away. My only problem is finding a proper place to mount it.

Still need to wire in the neutral switch (getting a CEL for it) and the reverse lights. Other than that she is done.

Oh and forgot to mention. I did an Exedy KSB04 Clutch. ACT Streetlite flywheel and my favorite was the OBX Helical Front LSD....Works AWESOME!

This is helpful for me, thank you!

Curious, did you put the 4.11 rear diff on there or did yours come that way? From what I've gathered I'm pretty sure mine came stock with a 3.90. It's a 93 rhd awd non turbo postal car.
Parts Needed:

Manual Cluster
Front & Rear bumper Chrome Trim
